Finally, yes, we really should pay agricultural workers more. We should require all employers to be held to legal employment rules, including minimum wages, OSHA, work permit/citizenship, etc.

Yes, that would raise the price of food. However, right now these agricultural workers are supporting YOUR cheap food by working for crap wages. I don't see any reason to continue your support at their expense.

OK, so if we're incapable of understanding racism, how does racism attract us to Trump's messages?

 

There are multiple confirmations he used the S word.

As for the other, it's pretty hard not to take just about everything says as being racist.

After all, he IS a racist and he makes no bones about it.

So, parsing his words and trying to figure out which words are racist and which are not is really just plain ridiculous.


BTW: If the target population of the comment is offended by the words used, it's pretty likely because those words are offensive.

It's a little like how come up with collective nouns for populations. The population in question gets to have a very serious opinion about it.

 

Allow me to correct a few things from your post.

First, the 1st picture you commented on was likely on one of the side streets surrounding 5th St., the heart of skid row. It actually look quite a bit cleaner than most streets on skid row, so I would guess it's Wall or St. Julien.

2nd the shot of the Midnight Mission was taken on the North East Corner of 6th and S. San Pedro. That is near skid row, so it's not what your trying to represent. Further, the MM's surroundings are policed by the homeless who are required to do so in order to take advantage of the programs the Midnight Mission offers. The general director is a personal friend of mine.

Finally, there are laws requiring employers to follow labor laws, OSHA regulations, etc.. Also, The Migrant and Seasonal Agricultural Worker Protection Act, passed in 1983 provides for work permits and temporary worker visas.

 

So if someone thinks black cats are racist because of the superstition that black is bad luck, it must be?

OBama is racist because he called his own flesh and blood a typical white person. And Hillary is racist because she claimed she keeps hot sauce in her purse like black people do, because they like spicy food. Using your logic they’re racist right?

 

Assuming that your post isn't meant as comedy, how is it that you see everything Trump says as being racist? What exactly is the mindset that is required to see the world that way?

 

I appreciate the fact that you can find some specific blocks where things are pretty bad, especially when the area has such tiny level of income.

The fact still remains that agricultural workers get very low pay for a number of reasons, including having to compete with illegal labor and exemptions from various laws.

I'd point out that we've had a lot of bigoted presidents. But, in Trump's case, in THIS era he is bringing racism into the realm of public policy.

And, the constitution suggests that is a major mistake.

 

All of 5th Street, East of S. Los Angeles Street, and within a half block is now skid row. It's not just some specific blocks. You probably want to rethink your claims about a place you don't appear to be familiar with.

No one is exempt from various laws. If you think that's the case, which laws are you referring to?

I do agree illegal aliens are a massive problem, and the agricultural industry is not immune to their crimes.
