National Voting Day. And every business should close down until the polls close. Ground the planes and stop the trains. Not so much as an elective surgery. Or is that too much to ask of our Republican vote-suppression friends?

I'm all for national holidays but before we do this, we should abolish the electoral college so every vote would actually count.

What a great idea. Especially for burglars.

(*)(*)(*)(*) right. And the senate should be abolished entirely, even tho my party has it at the time.

I see. So burglars are going to rob your house when you're at the polls rather than when you are at work. You must be Republican.

Because National Voting Day is more important than Columbus Day. And because Tuesday is a work day and the trains and subways don't stop for voting booths. And because Republicans would never win another election.

I can literally feel the desperation in this thread. Let me guess. You're against voter IDs too, huh?

I don't see why that would be needed or what it would achieve. Why do you need a whole day holiday to do something that takes 10 minutes? If anything, people who have no other reason to go out would be less likely to go out to vote (I tend to vote on the way to or from work).

I'd prefer a national ID, but what the hey?

Do you take a subway or train to work?

I guess you have to decide which is more important, giving people a chance to vote or firecrackers.

But I don't care. Just change the voting day from Tuesday to Saturday.

I think this is a great idea. We have national holidays for some of the stupidest things, like Columbus day, and Good Friday. A national "holiday" for voting would actually serve a purpose.

Absolutely. Both parties KNOW having elections on Tuesday suppresses turnout which is, as always, what Republicans are all about. I suspect they'd fight a national holiday (or even moving the election from Tuesday to Saturday) to the death.

That might hurt your cause. There would be more Rs able to vote since they wouldn't be working. Most Ds live off the government with a job or off welfare so they can always vote. Most Rs have real jobs.

You have absolutely no way of knowing ANY of what you just said.

I can only conclude that your entire post comes to us courtesy of your sphincter.

I walk for what it matters. The point is I'm already out of the house so it's more convenient than having to make a trip specifically to vote. I would anyway but I suspect a lot of people wouldn't.

I've absolutely no idea what you're talking about there.

You've still not explained why you're proposing the change or what benefits you think it would bring though. Closing absolutly everything for a day is huge hit to the economy so you'd need strong justification to do so. As far as I can tell, you've not even tried to provide any.

People thought having a national holiday for MLK would be a huge hit to the economy. Turns out, not so much. I'm proposing the change because more people should vote, and voting on a workday is hugely inconvenient for a lot of people. I know high turnout isn't in line with the Republican Party doctrine of suppressing the vote, but there you have it.

Is there something special about US elections I'm missing? Polling places are always going to close to your home, open from early in the morning to late in the evening and voting shouldn't take more than ten minutes or so. I fail to see the great inconvenience involved. People who use that as an excuse not to bother voting aren't going to drag themselves out of bed to vote on a national holiday.
