First, the 5 billion is a down payment on a ~25 billion wall that will also cost ~25 billion every 7 years to maintain.*

Second, the merits of the wall is a very large reason why it is such an issue. Plenty of experts say that it would not work and they also note that it would deprive Americans of their private land as well as be an ecological disaster.

Finally, yes, the optics of the deal are a large part for why both Trump wants to build the wall (it is something he has promised for four years and yet to erect for his base) and why the Democrats do not want to give in on this issue; however, I think it is more accurate to characterize "optics" as "will of the people." Trump wants to build the wall because his base wants to build the wall. Democrats do not want to build the wall because the people who just voted them into power (coincidentally, the majority) do not want to build the wall.

Thanks for correcting numbers I wasn’t exactly sure.
I think a wall would stop some immigration physically but I believe the wall would be more symbolic than anything. Imo Because I’m sure throwing that same money towards electrionic upgrades would be more beneficial. A wall sort of sets the tone for how American wants to be perceived on immigration. Is 25 billion worth that? Idk but given all the other frivolous spending in government at least there would be some benefits to be reaped from it.

Does the video contain the part where Trump mentioned picking up seats in the Senate and then shows Pelosi promptly disrespecting Indiana and North Dakota?

Schumer looked like he was trying not to stain the Oval Office upholstery.

    What BS.

A government shutdown means that some cube dwelling employees get to stay home and get their back pay later.

People with real jobs have more important things to worry about.

    Shut it down, nobody cares.

Annnddd no paycheck at Christmas time makes it difficult for a lot of people to put presents under the tree for eager little ones. Shutdown is a Grinch move.

She handled it pretty well. '

Trump made a fool of himself and publicly commmited himself to owning a shutdown, without any sort of plan or understanding by the GOP leadership.

Pelosi and Schumer gave him multiple off ramps. He was too dumb, too self absorbed and too clueless to take any of them.

Trumpsters don't seem to be too smart. But then Trump isn't too smart either, as his latest idiotic tantrum made clear.

You would have thought after Newt Gingrich destroyed his political career by staging the first poltically driven government shutdown, they would have learned.

Instead, the GOP used the shutdown threat all through Obama's first term, knowing that Obama could not take the risk of having a shutdown destroy the economy in the bottom of an economic crisis.

Ted Cruz went so far as to threaten the entire global financial system with his shutdown gambit.

Now Trump blusters and bungles his way into a shutdown. He'll own it, and the Demcrats will sit back and watch the GOP battle with its far right wing, while Trump blusters and dances.

Oh, and since I work for a small business that has about two million in outstanding recievables with the Federal government, and there are millions of businesses out there like me, I want you Trumpsters to tell me how I am supposed to pay for my real job while your fuhrer diddles.

The majority of Americans care. There are reasons that both political parties try very ****ing hard to blame the other side for any shutdown. Their voters care.

The fact that trumpettes have decided that they dont care solely because trump told them they shouldn't care...this time...is not enough.

"When the Republican President has to brag about winning Indiana and North Dakota, you know he's in trouble."

Trump walked into that very obvious trap by immediately bragging about winning Indiana and North Dakota. After he had walked into the very obvious trap of owning any trump shutdown.

Yeah, because the last shut down was awful, riots in the streets, people dying of hunger, oh wait, nobody even noticed because shutdowns aren't that big a deal...

That's why we picked Trump. All the Establishment choices would have caved.

Shutdown watch: “We need a great barrier … and we need the Democrats”

Gives Democrats an opportunity that they all aren't just for illegal stealing our jobs and votes while they commit crime and collect government benefits.

“Let’s be bipartisan, and let’s get it done,” Donald Trump exhorted as the federal government went into partial shutdown last night. In his brief address posted to Twitter, the president proclaimed the need for “a great barrier” to keep criminals and drugs out of the US.

“Call it a Democrat shutdown, call it whatever you want,” Trump said in a video released hours after the House and Senate adjourned for the night without a deal to avert the shutdown starting at midnight.

“Let’s work together, let’s be bipartisan and let’s get it done. The shutdown hopefully will not last long,” he added. …

Trump warned of violent, criminal gangs infiltrating the U.S. through its southern border while calling for the Senate to approve a bill passed by House Republicans that would fund the rest of the government while including $5 billion for his proposed border wall.

“Our great country must have border security. We don’t want people coming in who aren’t supposed to be here,” Trump says in the video. “It’s very dangerous out there. Drugs are pouring in.”
