Actually the habit to offer a free Bible to customers in hotels sounds curious to Europeans [in Italy, despite it's a Catholic and traditional country, this usually doesn't happen].

It is unconstitutional to prohibit Gideon from freely distributing their product. The correct action to this problem would be to allow the atheist or Muslims to also provide their material "freely" if they so desire. This would be the appropriate response under our constitution.

 

It would be unconstitutional for the government to prevent them from being distributed in general. There is no legal issue with a particular organisation preventing them being distributed on their property or removing them from it, the only condition being that government-related organisations would need to treat all religions equally.

Morally speaking, the Gideons (or anyone else) don't have any specific right to distribute their bibles in hotels and hotels no specific duty to either permit them to.

For over 100 years, the Gideons and other religious organizations have been placing Bibles in motel/hotel rooms- or more specifically, they make boxes of these Bibles available to motel operators for placement in all their rooms. It has become a traditional over the years, and some motels also place other religious works in rooms as well, such as the Book of Mormon. The Bible that the Gideons place is usually the King James Version (KJV) or the New King James Version.

The "public" motivation for this is to serve as active evangelism to persons who are traveling and might be emotionally distraught or in "need", as the Gideons define it, of their particular religion. There is an unspoken secondary purpose to it as well- since motel rooms are the places of choice for people who might be committing various sinful acts, that Bible could also act as an instrument of rebuke and shame.

These Bibles are provided free to the hotel/motel proprietor, and the Bibles themselves state that the room occupant is free to take it, so technically it is impossible to "steal" one of these Bibles, unlike the towels, sheets and other items in the room. It is completely voluntary on the part of the motel, as to whether or not they allow Bibles in the room, however nearly all of them do in the United States.

Are you suggesting that the old testament has nothing to do with the bible or the new testament?

 

This was not the state requiring Penn to remove the bibles. Penn honored a request to do so. Penn is a private institution, there can be no governmental requirement that Penn remove the bibles.

If I made a request that Penn paint all their rooms green...Penn has no requirement to oblige my request. Just as Penn was not obligated to honor the request to remove the bibles. Penn did so freely.

 

I don't blame you. You never know where those Gideon Bibles have been, and some hotels stock the Book of Mormon instead. I'd be particularly leery of public use Bibles on the Penn State campus, since they might well have been used by that Sandusky guy.

 

I lived in Happy Valley for over a year. There are no hotels on campus but mostly line N Atherton Av. This is an issue being addressed in the court systems.

The article I read on it used the word "Gideon" before "Bible" so there might be a valuable context clue for you, but the article I read said that Penn State denied that it has done this despite this anti-religion group's press release to the otherwise.
