And yes, I know the grooming defenders like to claim it's not about sex, but ALL of it is coming from adults .. and thus sex is most definitely a part of it. It's a new kind of unconscious or covert paedophilia, and is tied to the unhealthy interests of certain kinds of adults. Grooming can happen in the absence of interest in sexual activity with minors - it's crucial to understand that, to see what's actually going on. It can be (and often is), simply a will to remove barriers to even a focus on sexual matters. In this case the desire isn't for sexual congress ... the desire is to remove what is perceived as an oppressive and outdated taboo, restricting the adult's access to full and complete expression of sexuality.

Children are the last taboo, and in the mind of those who took the 20thC Western concept of sexual liberation literally, that becomes an obstacle they can't tolerate. Not because they want sex with children, but because they cannot stand having anything off limits. They were lead to believe there should be no limits, after all. When the last of these (in the adult world) were dismantled, they hit the wall. They don't like that wall. They've even convinced themselves it's in the childrens' interests - which is actually an important diagnostic feature of the sickness.
