The number of dead caused by the Iraq war easily exceeds one million. In wars, most civilian deaths are caused by lack of medicine, food, and energy, not direct violence. Although we will never know the exact number, it is more than reasonable to infer from the available evidence that the death toll was gigantic, horrific, and totally unacceptable.

 

There is no question that is was significantly more stable than it was after the invasion. And to the extent it was unstable prior to the invasion, that can be largely attributed to US sanctions which were intentionally destabilizing the Iraqi economy and causing death and misery on an enormous scale.
