I think your arguments lost a whole load of credit when you started throwing in all the "liberal vs conservative" crap that seems to dominate and overwhelm any attempt at serious discussion on these boards.

As for the actual points of discussion; There is a fundamental principal of personal freedom but there is also the principal of living within a society with a shared responsibility for the well-being of other members. Pretty much everything we do has an impact on other people in society - if you have an unhealthy diet and lifestyle, you'll generally be able to do less work and will require more resources to support you, all at a cost to society as a whole.

The answer is to find the balance between the two principals. That's never been easy though, be it for true conflicts of opinion or partisan arrogance.

If they want to know what is in their food, then they should act like adults and do the due diligence themselves. Of course, if they only eat whole, unprocessed foods like fruits and vegetables, they won't have to worry about what is in their food, will they?

Yes, so clearly the solution is to make government bigger and more powerful. That will put those big corporations back in line...

I agree... Very much... Very refreshingly with the OP and many comments.

However..... I oppose drug use. It is not eating... It's an abnormal, unnatural way of consuming... Smoking, etc.

All of those methods of consuming should be banned. Think about it. No more substance evaluation, just simply outlaw the act of smoking, syringing etc. etc. what you are left with are pills and alcohol (which are consumed). Any existing drugs which are already consumed are still banned.

Phase out cigarettes until they are not used much and each year raise the legal age by 1 to effectively make new smokers illegal. Close down all contraband production and make selling or holding of drug contraband (pipes, bongs, etc.) illegal.

At the same time, DO allow fine cigars... They are not inhaled, and so they won't be banned, but cigarettes (which are inhaled) are banned as mentioned.

If you do not like drugs, don't use them. But you do not have the right to decide that consenting adults are not allowed to.

What will you do when all milk producers label their products as "Non-GMO"...

Petition the government to agree that your product is not GMO also... Such as... It was natural birthed from an established strain and as such it cannot be considered modified?

I would not be surprised at all if you did something as described, however absurd it is.

I believe you don't care about peoples' right to choose. Only their money. It's all that matters. Not health. Not prosperity or economic fairness, just cost undercutting the market.

Well guess what. I can grow milk in a laboratory in large vats from cow cells grown on substrate and a select recipe of raw chemicals. What's to stop me. I will make milk a million fold better than yours. And it will be more scientific too. Pwe.

The US Government... Not that it's bad (well... It IS bad, but that's not it)... Also requires PERFUME manufacturers to make the perfume TOXIC alcohol. So they actually don't want people to be well drinking it, but to get sick and vomit... It's not awful... It's not shocking... It makes sense as a policy, but... It's interesting. So if you want to make perfume at home through vodka distillation over flower petals and spices, let's say... It's illegal.

Yet another crime that means common people can't LIVE. It's life. Many apothecary remedies and sanitization, pleasant aromas could be made from home for cheap. Entrepreneurs could create unimaginable new products but for one thing... It's illegal. The law does not distinguish between good intentions.

Children cannot legally run lemonaide stands without food permits and work permits, and they DO get shut down despite the merit of the law being about adult businesses.

The only people who have freedom, it seems, are the corporate "people" who have superior government representation, support, financial assistance, access to contracts, and superior speech via "money" (Supreme Court declaration). The common US natural people have been relegated as second-class citizens with inferior rights, and YES the US Government is in breach of contract.

Do you REALLY think they will label food? WHO IS INVITED TO THIS DEBATE? It is solely a discussion between the mega-corporation and the pigeon US Politician. The mega-corporation has fully worked out its depiction, and the Politician is obligated to speak to NO ONE for alternative viewpoints.

There won't be any labels, my friends! Only more tyranny!

But the onus of responsibility is with those who do things which are not expected. Plus, if you leave it to the better nature of food companies, most of them will not label what's in the food, as they simply don't want you to know, leaving most food products unmarked.

A simple colour coding chart for sugar, fat etc... would help no end, yet the EU food industry killed this initiative via very very expensive lobbying. Why would they do this if they didn't have faith in their products? Did they suspect that if their customers actually knew what was in their products, their customers would buy less of it?

    Well colour me shocked!

depends which corporations bigger, the pharmaceutical companies want cigarettes to be harmful so they can sell more nicorette, thus carpet glue was mandated to be put in all cigarettes

if gmo is bigger money then your regular farms, they too will win sadly, it's not what's best for the people, it's what's best for the politicians and that is counted in dollars and cents

look at pain meds, they do the same thing, add additives to ruin the livers of abusers.. why? just cause they can, I mean it's already bad for you to abuse, so anymore bad really doesn't matter right? winning the war on drugs is more important then peoples health

mikezila recommends against processed food. you can never know what is in something unless you're putting it in yourself.

And it wasn't because they actually wanted a safer cigarette? I'm struggling to get on board with your theory here.

Leffe recommends not referring to ones self in the third person. ;) But ultimately agrees.

After the current issue in the UK/Ireland etc,... where horse and pig meat (not that I actually mind either) was found in hanburger meat, I'm actually getting to the stage of buying a meat mincer, so I can actually see what goes into the minced meat I use when cooking.

constantly relighting a cigarette or smoking it faster so it won't go out doesn't make it safer.

Well they burn out and subsequently fall out of ash trays, causing fires - I presume this is the theory. If they stop buring, they are far more likely to stay in the ash tray and will not be alight. This seems to make logic sense to me.

cigarettes that cause fires don't fall out of ashtrays, they fall out of the hands of people smoking in bed. even when i had a 3 pack habit, that's something i never did.

Having a name is not a criteria to not eat something IMO. People keep pigs as pets and give them names and in horse farms, the horses are not given names. Apparently the meat is far more healthy than beef. But this is an aside. It becomes increasingly obvious to me that the global food chain is not that trustworthy. Meat is moved all around the planet, mixed and fecked around with before it gets to the end customer.

No offence by my nightmare scenario is US ground beef - the stuff has a long and unpleasant history of recalls on a huge scale! Your ground beef industry is pretty bad, from farming all the way through to end product.

    - - - Updated - - -

Well that's your opinion. I simply struggle to get on baord with the theory that the new papers were put in place to actually make people ill. Why the hell purposefully kill your own customers - not good business sense.

Had friends who used to raise pigs for eating. They were all named 'freezer.' I was training a horse that constantly tried to run me down....He earned the name 'Alpo.'

a hazard of industrialized food production....but at least they're looking out and erring on the side of caution. the bacteria issues aren't issues if the meat is properly cooked, but there's a lot of folks out there that like it as close to still mooing as they can get it.

as for filler meat, it's not done. if it says ground beef, it better be just beef or the USDA will fine you until you're homeless. even "pink slime" was all beef...even more beefy than the beef it was added to.

hold up there! it wasn't the cigarette makers idea...it was the government's! first they complain about additives, then they force additives that make some people smoke more. wtf?
