It's like being in a car doing a drive-by and then getting shot later by cops. It's kind of like Karma.

and that does not justify being permanently disfigured and disabled.

Nope the kid will go to jail for his crimes and his family will sue the state to hell and back.

for sure. The kid definitely broke the law, no question. But the state/city needs to pay millions to this family in punitive damages.

The police dog was just doing his job.

True that he did not know how to follow the command "halt!"

Maybe because the cop did not say it right in German. He used English.

    Yup exactly.

Excessive force used by a police dog -- his sharp teeth.

Hopefully the judge will summarily dismiss.

I would say it was the handler's fault.

    He was speaking in English.

These dogs are trained in German.

Yeah, this dog needs to be taken out of the program. Either that or the guy needs to lose the privilege of having his dog.

My dog is far better trained than that thing, he showed absolutely ZERO control of his animal/partner at all.

    Horrible policeman.

I've never agreed with the practice of using dogs in LE. Investigation- yes. War- yes. But their instinctual and thereby unpredictable nature has no place in the 'maintaining order' setting.

Sounds like the dog either not trained enough, or the handler simply lost control.

I don't believe in awarding punitive damages. The locality should probably pay for his medical. I say probably because I don't know all the details of the case.

Yep. a properly trained police dog follows commands to the letter. That one is either too green/not yet ready to be in the street, has some personality defects, or receives too many mixed messages from an incompetent trainer.

Punitive damages are a necessary deterrent for gross negligence.

My idea is that individuals should be reimbursed only for money they lost, money only. Lawsuits are about money, not about hurt feelings, pain, grief, or other emotional stuff. If a true crime has been committed, that would be a criminal issue, not a civil one. It would completely reform our broken legal system. I figure, if someone has a real gripe about say a corporation, like McDonalds, they could sue for a million dollars, and if they won, McDonalds would pay their legal fees and a large (say a million dollars) fine, which would go to a charitable organization. But the individual wouldn't get any of it, which would do away with frivolous lawsuits. Because no one would take the time to sue if they didn't really have a case, and believe in their issue.

    Dark Meat anyway.

Seriously there should be liability against the P.D. and this dog
needs to be retired. The perp was obeying the officers instructions.
The 17 year old hardly appears like a "kid".
Maybe he can retire off this incident.
Especially if there is permanent damage to his hand/arm

I understand your position. I just disagree with it. People/companies/governments should be punished for their negligence when the harm caused is significant.

And then hopefully the criminal's victims sue him for all that money he wins from the state.
