Pretty sure you've seen the report about the Northumbrian Police investigation and convictions in the news this morning, just wondered what your thoughts on this were.... however..... It sounds distasteful but so is the world these poeple inhabit thus fighting for the protection of the kids surely justifies the means. Bearing in mind the restrictions the Police put on XY's movements and activities I think the NSPCC should regard the use of this XY and the money paid to him as money well spent. Thoughts... http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/201...victed-child-rapist-10000-spy-asian-grooming/
OP Well at least the useless fools 'took it extremely seriously' - their right-on corporate message, meaningless though it is - and backed it up with a bit of action as well. I mean, taking a bit of action makes a nice change even if it does mean paying a ****ing paedophile wads of our money - which they didn't have to do in that after they got what they wanted they could've told him to **** off. God it's so depressing.
In the UK, “Asian” generally refers to people from the Indian sub-continent (as in this case). “Oriental” is more common for people from the far east (without any of the negative connotations the word seems to have in the US). I suspect it’s just a historic thing, with most contact between the Asian continent and Europe would have been from our East while most contact between the Asian continent and the Americas would be from your West so the generic term “Asian” would naturally come to refer to different peoples.
There are negative connotations about it here too; some senior plod was on Today this morning saying there are at least two thousand Muslims under surveillance. When asked how the security services manage to survey all of them around-the-clock and around-the-calendar (my expression) the plod said they couldn't. Isn't multiculturalism wonderful?
In the UK Asian refers to people from Asia. Look up Asian chicks and you will get yellow girls not brown. Paki is commonly used to refer to people from the sub continent, but it is deemed as non PC. Offensive language. And so Asian is used currently. To differentiate between yellow and brown we sometimes refer to east Asians as Orientals. But there is no win here, Oriental girls in the US, take umbrage to this and insist I call the Asian. Eventually as people who dislike Asians begin to use that term derogatively, the term will itself be attributed negative social connotations and outlawed. And we will then be encouraged to use a new "clean" word to mean the same thing, rinse and repeat. However changing the nomenclature we use does not change the way we think. it's a mugs game.
