That's just not true. While the abolitionist movement didn't really begin for 50 years, the opponents of slavery voiced their opinions during the drafting of the constitution. Even slave owners, like Franklin, stated the practice was wrong. There was just no way to have a constitution and and abolition at the same time. So, they compromised.

And that's really why even in 1860 there was no political will in the North to have a war to free slaves. There's a difference between being a white supremacist choosing NOT to make slavery the paramount issue.

But the South's cause in secession was simply to maintain an equal power for slave holding states. That's not a noble cause anyway you cut the cheese. (-:
