I'm not a football fan but I've been reading about people demanding that a football player who punched his girlfriend be fired. The irony of a man who is hired to, at least in part, hit people is to be fired for hitting people. I certainly think the man should be charged with assault and if convicted he should serve his sentence.

But, I'm curious. If a woman shoplifts at a store, should people demand she be fired from her job as a secretary at the school district offices? If a salesman for a used car company be fired because he's cheating on his wife? Should President Clinton have been fired for getting blowjobs in the Oval Office? Should a woman who shot her sleeping husband twice in the head be fired from her job selling flowers in a shop? She probably won't go to jail but should she lose her job? How about a lawyer who vandalizes a car because it has what he considers an offensive bumper sticker? Should he lose his job as a lawyer for the state highway department?

The question is, should the public demand a person be fired for behavior that was not related to their job?

He's basically an entertainer, so he can be fired for behavior that the public doesn't like.

ALso, he's a running back, his goal is not to hit people or be hit.

    A. I'm not a football fan but I did go to a lot of domestic violence calls involving football players. I got really tired of hearing the women say, "I never dreamed he was violent." Football is a violent game. I don't care what position you play. His goal might be to not hit or be hit but if the occasion presents itself he will be hit and he will hit.

    B. He can be fired for any reason. I never questioned that. My question was, should people demand he be fired? How about a teacher who hits her husband with a skillet? Fire her?

If it's not a justified skillet hit, yes. That's assault with a weapon.

My mother hit me with on the back with a frying pan when I was 8 years old because she caught me stealing a 5 dollar bill from her purse. Since that moment, I went to college, majored in Criminal Justice and Military Sciences, became a Soldier, and never committed a crime again. Thank you mom for letting me have it when I was a kid. I will never steal after that whoopin.

That last part sounds a bit personal. Is there something you feel the need to confess to us?
