I'll take Bidens "Muck up". Over your or the OPs version of success from Putin or Trump any day.

Russia is not winning in anything right now.
If you have any complaints of our economy, try dealing with the garbage Russia is going through right now.
They are working 14 hour shifts, getting paid pennies, surviving on the Putin stimulus. F'that.

Of course Biden can't control a sociopathic dictator. His folly lies in the fact he believed he could through sanctions which hurt Americans more than they hurt Russians. The regime change he will effect will be his own, not Putin's.

We've reached peak Godwin when even the German goes full Hitler.

Every contemporary problem can be simplified to reductio ad Hitlerum.

The gold exchange appears to be a temporary measure, but it could be a test for making a version of the ruble that would be acceptable to the international community.

Interesting read. Do you know what Russia's debt to GDP ratio is? I heard it was very low.

I read recently that it was 18% and in the same article, the guy who wrote this said that Russia can't afford to just print more money because of its debt to GDP ratio, unlike the US (100%) or Japan (250%). I was just like, wtf?

I believe the US ratio is closer to 124% as of 2021. I am not pro-Putin, just interested in understanding Russia's financial situation as compared to other countries.

Its absurd. Militarily attacking a country because they wont double swear promise that they will never join NATO. Russia wants complete
His invasion has nothing to do with NATO. Its about the territorial waters of the Azov and Black seas and their abundance of gas and oil that he is after. 2012 the abundance of oil and gas in the Azov and Black seas were discovered. 2013 Romania and Ukraine had deals with western companies to develop the gas and oil fields, 2014 Putin invades Crimea. Putin is now extracting gas with offshore rigs that belonged to Ukraine that he seized in Crimea.

I think if the Russians are smart (and many people seem to be emotionally invested in believing they're not) they will start printing roubles at a slow and steady rate while waiting until winter time, at which point they start turning the gas on and off in spurts, selectively per country. This will cause a lot of political and social upheaval. All they really need is for one major country to balk and start paying in roubles and the rest will freak out. Standard divide and conquer stuff really.

Both good points that should make us question the narrative of 'Putin just wants to expand' that we're being pummeled with by our media.

Until quite recently, (roundabouts Jan/Feb of this year) it wasn't very difficult to find western media outlets willing to write about how our MIC was using NATO and European strife to try to drum up a conflict with Russia, usually citing the massive profits to be made when WW3 is always looming on the horizon such as during the cold war. Good luck finding them now, no one wants to be labelled 'Russian propaganda.'

Turkey, a NATO country is not going to be a part of the sanctions against Russia. I'm guessing they understand sanctions will be more damaging to their country than to Russia.

That's a good point, I personally rarely pay attention to the Turks because they're so blatantly in it for themselves, so I'm not even very interested in trying to understand them, but I guess along with Hungary that makes two countries.

I think I should walk back my six months claim. Since there is a huge release of strategic oil reserves, Europe can probably stumble through their first winter but this will still be going on by next winter, at which point they'll be out of oil. They have to figure something out before then and hopefully it won't be too stupid.

I read where Germany still has it's coal and nuclear power plants in tact and have been maintained even though they were shut down. The article said Germany could start those power plants up in short time.

Sanctions were put in place to exact a toll for the invasion. Nobody thought they would stop Putin.

Yes but even if they do, they would need to be able to get coal and uranium to power them and historically most of that has come from Russia too.

And the toll they exact is higher for the US than for Putin.
