I wonder what got him. That car does not look that bad. The roll cage although slightly bent looks in good condition
Looks like the front supports on the cage gave way. Open wheel, short track, dirt racing is probably the most dangerous form of auto racing, IMO.
Hmm you might be right there. The way they design those sprint cars they can absorb a lot of energy without killing the driver......thankfully
Probably bonked his head, that's the usual M.O. in these types of wrecks. That's what got Vogler, and Jeff Andretti, among others. Kind of reminds me of the Vogler wreck in a way, Rich had just qualified for his first Nascar cup race and was killed the night before the running.....at Pocono. I was lucky enough to get to see Jason race USAC midgets many times. He will be missed, he was one of the good guys.
Seems you are right smalltime. An autopsy showed blunt force trauma, even though he was wearing a NASCAR approved HANS device http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nascar/2013/06/13/jason-leffler-cause-of-death-nascar/2421945/
Sorry to say that I've lost many racing heroes in my life. Some of them to plane crashes, but most to head injuries. They all died doing what they loved to do, that's the only consolation.
