Why do I have an odd feeling that if a student expressed this sentiment in white sheets instead of a mere wristband there would be problems...

I'm not excusing it, because I think it's an inappropriate to guilt trip white kids into thinking they owe non whites something.

This is all probably the efforts of somebody prone to melodrama, and certainly not an indication that "the left" hates whites

There are much better ways to raise awareness that European Americans, who played the larger role in forming the government and economic structure in America, have historically NOT accumulated the same degree of institutionalized socioeconomic disadvantages that non European Americans did untill about 1970.

The time for apologies is over, unless of course one is a Stormfront member, or that type of filth.

"The time for apologies is over..."

    Taxcutter says:
Indeed so. Now we have to get that through the thick heads of these "educators."

I concur. The time is for crusading against institutionalized and de jure racism and discrimination, wherever it may be, whatever form it may take. The efforts of these educators in Wisconsin merely perpetuate this vicious cycle of 'othering', as opposed to transcending it.

What, pray tell, is an "institutionalized socioeconomic disadvantage".....would that be the same thing as affirmative action.......or would it relate more to a culture making incredibly bad decisions over and over again?

    Really?

So the people alive now whose first 20 and 30 years of life was constrained by a whole web of LAWS limiting their ability to go to school, blocking their access to get a whole range of good jobs and where they could live or get loans to buy houses has left NO residue AT ALL on their lives, and the lives they could afford to provide for their children?

Yet the white Righties of today cry like stuck pigs if anyone even attempts to take a DIME from THEIR "legacy" of family wealth, the free money and backing they received from their parents' legally enforced white advantages over minorities.

I'd say calling the legal discrimination in the USA "game over" is a generation premature, at least. Of course, we expect the beneficiaries of theft and repression to regularly and emphatically deny how well they profited from legally enforced artificial advantages.

I've been telling people for ages that discrimination towards whites is going to get worse and worse as the years go by.

People need to start speaking out about this crap and put an end to it before it gets out of control.

This is plain old racism and contempt for people who are white.

This type of public education campaign is completely useless and it's rather counterproductive to link white Americans in general with the past history of racism and anti-racism campaigns can only be effective when they target specific groups which actively promote racism.

I am not inclined to ask myself any of those question. I have been anything but privileged throughout my life.

So how does traumatizing and guilt-tripping white children help older black people?

What you are preaching is reverse racism and reverse Jim Crow just for the sake of revenge.

“How old are these people you speak of?”

    Taxcutter says:
Brown v. Board of Education was handed down in 1954. This decision destroyed the legal underpinnings of Jim Crow supported by Plessy v. Ferguson. So a person who was thirty in 1954 would be eighty-nine today.

What the boneheads in the Wisconsin schools are doing is promoting a cultural form of “Blood attainder” – making descendant liable for alleged crimes of ancestors. The Framers of the Constitution came down hard on this practice (the eighteenth century British were big on this) and for darned good reason. Such an attainder is a means of continuing a feud over multiple generations. Clearly a legal attainder is as unconstitutional as things get, but a cultural attainder works to Balkanize America into a patchwork of little groups with their cherished hates. The word “Balkanize” is particularly apt in this case. The hatreds of the Balkans date back centuries. “We hate all Croats because of what they did to great-great-great-great-great-great uncle Vladimir back in 1673.” The attainder put forth by the Wisconsin school officials is no less preposterous than the Balkan hatreds.

Grow up. It’s over. It was over a half-century ago. Put it behind you and move on.

Balkanizing America for the sake of a few nonagenerians is hare-brained [policy.

The school officials should be disciplined.

Well said Goldie, well said. Zinnisian history has run its course, its time for unity no matter what your skin color is. Anyone who is still a racist is a loser, white or black.

An example of institutionalized socioeconomic disadvantages would be the practice the town I grew up in where real estate agents and brokers engaged in an organized refusal to show homes or property to African Americans or Latinos.

Bad decisions would include an individual employer refusing to hire minorities, or dissproportianatlly bad treatment of minorities arrested by certain law enforcment officers based on race, religion, etc...

I don't know of a single employer (including myself) that refuses to hire minorities.......I do know of lots of corporations and government agencies that hire and promote minorities simply because of the color of their skin...to the detriment of white applicants and employees. This is 2013 not 1913....your world view needs a bit of updating....just sayin'

Absolutely...it's actually the belief in the organic superiority or inferiority of one race over another.

Too often, people use the word racism when they're really referring to discrimination, bigotry, or prejudice...which can all be perpetrated without the belief in the organic superiority or inferiority of one race over another.

Of course there is still bigotry, discrimination, racism, and all manner of unsavory stuff going on, and it continues to affect those put in disadvantageous socioeconomic situations.

Also...the affects of 300 years of socioeconomic disadvantages should NOT be expected to dissappear COMPLETELY in 60 years.

But what isn't going to change that is indiscriminate guilt trips towards people who may or may not perpetuate all of that.

Well, I've had personal experience with several companies that have refused to hire/interview minorities, and they're usually small businesses. An example was one conservative righty hiring manager who was interviewing me, and I told him I was a Goldwater conservative. He took this to mean he could confide in me that he won't call applicants for interviews if they had names he couldn't pronounce, or names like Keeshawn, or Latoya.

It's possible you simply don't know of a single employer who will admit that they refuse to hire minorotes.

Whites have historically NOT been as negatively affected by accumulated long term institutionalized socioeconomic disadvantegs, and Affirmative Action was designed to correct that, because there are people out there who think they've achieved equality.

A perfect example of why whites need to be educated in the advantage they have had from legal discrimination meaning they got to be on top by raial advantage.

Are you REALLY asserting that "removing the legal underpinnings of Jim Crow" got rid of discriminatory laws? If the USA was th fantasy world you like to pretend it is, theoretically that would be true, but the racist institutions and people who liked "traditional ways" (i.e. the ones that let them, with NO effort, get a leg up over so many others) would STOP enforcing the laws that made allwoed them to do so welland feel so smug about their "white superiority".and "personal accomplishments".

For at least 30 years, even after the barely passed Civil Rights Act in 1964, racists everywhre gought legal battle after legal battle to protect their racism and their racist laws against employment, housing, loans, legal protections, and so much more for minorities. Case after case, even when the laws were blatantly in violation of the Constitution, the racists fought to keep their advantage, and to arbitrarily deny the access to minorities and women.

And when a specific case was won in court, the racists would simply ignore the decisions, until court orders were obtained at great cost and effort, and even then the racists, many of them "conservative heroes" defied the laws to keep their unnatural advantages before we could discover their weakness and fraudulent accomplishments.

Of course, these racists used enormous amounts of the tax money, tax money paid by minoroties too, to defend their "right" to keep minorities down.

And now, the racists try to pretend that multiple generations of education, access to good jobs and careers and retirement and nice houses being passed from parnts to children is "no advantage", and liek to pretend we all have "the same start". The poor Whiny White men scream like stuck pigs when the slightest advantage is given to those they had screwed so recently.

And those whiny whites never admit that getting a few getting chance to get INTO a good school is NOT accomplishing graduation from those schools, and the racists like to claim.that people fo great accomplishment were simply handed their opportunities. When in fact, the racists are describing their OWN lives.

Now applicants with names like Keyshawn and LaToya are a horse of a different color.......I said I didn't know any employers (including myself) who discriminate against minorities.....but I know lots of employers (including myself) who would take a resume from Keyshawn and LaToya and place it in the circular file. The reason is because folks with names like that have really stupid parents and the parent's DNA gets transferred to their children.

How long do you think we need to keep up this affirmative action nonsense?

"..."removing the legal underpinnings of Jim Crow" got rid of discriminatory laws?"

    Taxcutter says:
An unenforceable law is not a law anymore.

Jim Crow died with the Brown v. Board of Education decision, almost sixty years ago. Time to quit acting like the Hatfields & McCoys keeping an old feud going.

The school officials should be disciplined. Otherwise we can assume their racism is official policy.
