Hey folks, this is going to be a big one,... So big in fact, that this vote has been split into seven different parts. Original Discussion Thread: http://www.politicalforum.com/index...nact-comprehensive-immigration-reform.535480/ The plan here, is that we will vote on each of the parts, each containing a number of items, and at the end of that voting we'll have a list of options ranked from what we feel are the most important to implement down to the least. I'll then go through that resulting list from top to bottom adding each item ranked above the status quo option to a comprehensive plan... with the exception of items that conflict with each-other, in which case, whichever item was ranked higher gets added. In the final (comprehensive) stage, this resulting comprehensive plan will be pitted against others that have been suggested (including a couple by the senate) and we'll vote one last time to see which comprehensive plan we like best. So, for this particular topic of immigration, in order to fully participate in crafting the final resulting plan, you should try to cast a ballot in each of the following threads, particularly the five in the middle... What is the Most Important Immigration Category Needing to be Dealt With? How To Enact Immigration Reform? (Undocumented Immigrants & Visa Overstays) How To Enact Immigration Reform? (Immigrants Wishing to Immigrate Legally) How To Enact Immigration Reform? (Immigrants Who've Already Achieved Legal Status) < (You Are Here) How To Enact Immigration Reform? (Immigration Systems, Security, & Enforcement) How To Enact Immigration Reform? (Foreign Outreach/Other) How To Enact Immigration Reform? (Comprehensive) And I know I always say that its important to rank a lot of options in your ballot, but given the nature of this issue I would say that that goes double for this set of votes in particular. If you want your ballot to be comprehensive and have an impact on the comprehensive results then please try to rank at least one option from each of the main colored letter sections. (i.e. at least one R, S, T, and U) You can of course, and are highly encouraged, to rank even more than that. Also, please excuse my shorthand... Also note that 14th Amendment/Birthright citizenship related options are included here in this section. I'm on break for 15 minutes, I don't have time to figure out your ranked vote system. Just use a poll next time with multiple choices. You need to speak conversational English. Once you're a citizen that's it. You may as well have been born here to a family of 10 generations. Anyone who Illegally immigrates should be banned from every entering again, even for travel. Second offence 10 years prison then deportation. Nobody who isn't from a country with a connecting land border will be considered a refugee. No chain migration, not even for spouses. It should be taken into consideration upon your application like anyone else. Total migration should be limited at 10% of local births in any given year. For Australia that would cut our numbers by a factor of 8. Anyone willing to bring a substantial investment should be exempt from this and let in with very little effort. Before you get citizenship you should live here for 10 years continually and assimilate. You should have to demonstrate this with community ties, English competency, and a test. Insufficient progress will result in deportation. On anchor babies, the child should get to stay in the care of the state, but the parents should be banned for life. That or they can take the child back.
Wouldn't have worked for what I'm trying to do here, for a number of reasons. For one thing, with the exception of this section (there are 5 others) and its 17 options, there are just too many options in the others. The built in forum software maxes out at 20. But really, all you need to do is sort the list from the OP with options you think really ought to be implemented at top, and options you think are less important at the bottom/end. Pretty simple. Also note that the status quo option basically just means that any options you rank below it you feel are options which are probably better left unimplemented. Lastly, I should mention that different aspects of the immigration issue are split up across the different sections. For instance, you mentioned banning immigrants who enter illegally, that option is covered in a diff section: How To Enact Immigration Reform? (Undocumented Immigrants & Visa Overstays). Though the part about 10 years prison isn't mentioned there (but it can be added to a sorted list as a 'write-in'). Here are the different sections. Note in the parenthesis what aspect each section covers: What is the Most Important Immigration Category Needing to be Dealt With? How To Enact Immigration Reform? (Undocumented Immigrants & Visa Overstays) How To Enact Immigration Reform? (Immigrants Wishing to Immigrate Legally) How To Enact Immigration Reform? Several people already have (at least for other votes), including myself. :/ Its not really that difficult, or do you disagree? -Meta
I do agree though, that with the bigger ones, i.e (Undocumented Immigrants & Visa Overstays), that the number of options there is a bit intimidating at first glance, but its not so bad once you get into it. Also, you don't actually have to include every option in your sorted list if you don't want to. If you just pick one option from each colored letter category (e.g. for this section, one R option, one S option, one T option etc.) that would actually be sufficient for a comprehensive vote. -Meta
Also, while I find the regular posting tools sufficient for sorting, Derideo suggests that using Excel might make it a bit easier. What do you think of that idea? -Meta
Well I would hope that the people who really care about finding an agreeable solution to the issue would at least. But I know not everyone is that interested. Still though, would you have any suggestions on how to get more people interested in something like this, especially given the large number of options involved? How to best come to a consensus here? How to get more folks to understand that sorting a list is a lot simpler than it seems?... And is there anything in particular that makes you hesitant to cast a vote yourself? Is it just the number of choices? The fact that sorting is required? The way the sections are split up? Or is it something else? -Meta
