    "Ideally" you are not there at all. What if cover is not near? My point is sometimes dropping to the ground would be wiser than running for an exit or trying to find cover. It takes VERY thick "cover" to stop a 5.56. Sometimes being least in the path of bullets ASAP would be a the wiser choice.

    Every situation is different, but dropping to the ground compromises your mobility. If you have something to drop behind, then dropping is an option. If not, then getting to cover makes more sense, and while you want to stay low, you want to be able to move as quickly as possible.

    It depends on what load is in the 5.56! A lot of it would break up in relatively light cover. Some would penetrate some layers of wood and sheetrock, but no concrete.
