Whereas you think you understand "the Russian psyche"? Based on what, the English-language fake news you regularly consume?
This war is proving that the Ukrainians will not surrender to a fascist invader any more than the Soviets did when they were invaded.

Yes, modern Russia has become fascist under Putin. Like the Nazis, the fascist Russians think of themselves as the good guys. That's what happens when people are systematically lied to and kept from the truth by the powers-that-be. Mind you, I'm not talking about all Russians here, but those in power and the portion of Russia's remaining, dwindling population who are believe the propaganda they are fed and believe in Putin the way an unfortunate segment of Americans believe even Trump's baseless lies about the last election and in the pathologically dishonest man himself.

Now, regarding this garbage you've referenced. The first claims that a brief published by RAND Corporation (here: https://www.rand.org/pubs/research_briefs/RB10014.html) equates to official US policy toward Russia and Ukraine, and that claim is made by this *******: https://original.antiwar.com/author/rick_sterling/

    The brief starts out thusly:

This brief summarizes a report that comprehensively examines nonviolent, cost-imposing options that the United States and its allies could pursue across economic, political, and military areas to stress—overextend and unbalance—Russia’s economy and armed forces and the regime's political standing at home and abroad. Some of the options examined are clearly more promising than others, but any would need to be evaluated in terms of the overall U.S. strategy for dealing with Russia, which neither the report nor this brief has attempted to do.

Whether the US government is acting on these assessments and recommendations, in whole or in part, is not entirely clear.

Meanwhile, the ******* you linked to, "Rick Sterling," is basically just posting Russian state propaganda verbatim. His reference to RAND was done to try and substantiate a claim that the US is essentially out to get poor Russia, which obviously fails since it's not even a statement of official US policy towards Russia, but rather a collection of factual assessments and suggestions for policymakers to consider.

The ******* goes on to repeat Russian state nonsense about the significance of Ukraine to Russia, about our allegedly wanting to target Ukraine for that reason, and about Victoria Nuland (of course) allegedly staging a "violent coup" there to that end. All of this is paranoid Russian propaganda being used to justify a war of conquest by Russia which seeks to secure fascist Russian control over the territory of Ukraine. Fascist Russia under Putin denies Ukraine a right to exist as a free and independent country, basically regarding it as a part of modern fascist Russia instead. In short, modern fascist Russia regards Ukraine the way fascist Nazi Germany regarded Austria and other German-majority regions in Europe that were outside of fascist Germany's control. It is all fundamentally imperialist thinking, and fascism is the political means by which would-be imperialists establish and sustain their imagined empires in this modern age of nation states. With this fascism come dictatorship and militarism of the sort we are now witnessing in Russia.

Not sure what your point is.

These Iranians are coming through the normal immigration process like people from the UK are. It is not due to some special program.

Normal immigration vouching is OK. I went through it myself more than 20 years ago and my background was properly investigated.
Spotty southern border is a problem - I’ve seen reports that even Africans and Russians, who wish to immigrate to the U.S. illegally, go to Mexico and then cross the land border on foot. For comparison - Russian-Ukrainian border is spotty too and Russians were giving out their passport to anyone who asked. I just hope that we learn these lessons by observing, before it’s too late.

Yeah, I've seen such reports. It sounds like people are desperate to get in and they view walking up to the border as a way to do it, presumably because no matter who happens to be in the White House or holding a majority in Congress, US immigration policy remains basically the same -- not very open or welcoming. It's been locked-down enough that we haven't had much in the way of foreign terrorism, in fact.

I suppose I share your concern that Russia could send hostile agents to try and sneak in as supposed refugees, but then I'm not too worried about what they might actually accomplish if they did get in.

Yep, the U.S. government, regardless of who is in charge, should work towards implementing proper control of the border. An immigration reform would be nice too. Illegal childhood arrivals should probably stay, as culturally they are Americans, as well as existing illegal immigrants if they are properly vouched. I’d also scrap the green card lottery and replace it with some policy that invites foreign professionals, like programmers, engineers, etc (obviously, with proper vouching). American economic power is based on never ending innovation - we must ensure our schools teach technical sciences and supplement fresh graduates with foreign professionals. :)

    No we didn't.

Those are most likely people coming in through family based petitions. The same avenue available to everyone else in he world.

There are no special US immigration programs that Iranians have access to that every other person on the planet does not.

What about the less-skilled huddled masses seeking safe refuge and economic opportunity here? We would not want to discount the value that they, like the ancestors of those born here, can bring as well. I feel that they are unfairly branded as worthless welfare moochers by the people who are eager to demonize immigrants -- especially those trying to come in at the southern border -- for political reasons. Skilled or not, one of our greatest national treasures and assets is immigration and the sheer volume of talent and labor that this brings in.

The DV lottery is a statistically insignificant percentage of our annual immigration.

We have programs for skilled workers already.

We should do a better job of training our own skilled workers instead of outsourcing to make up for the failure of our education system.

Things were different back then, immigration often looked the other way.

"When the quota for immigrants under that provision was reached, many others immigrated through an imaginative use of a provision regarding “hard‐to‐find workers.” According to immigration officials, many Iranian businessmen set up businesses in the United States, specified that they needed employees with specific skills that they possessed, then hired themselves and immigrated.

“It's a well‐known dodge,” said Monica Bell, deputy district director of the San Francisco office of the Immigration and Naturalization Service. She said that the continuing review of student visas would bring out only those students who are fairly certain that they comply. “The others probably won't come,” she said. “Their chances are pretty good that they may escape detection. The abuse is absolutely incredible.”

One reason there are so many Iranian students is that universities have found that recruiting them is lucrative and way to bolster sagging enrollments. Some schools were so eager to bring wealthy Iranians to the United States that they sent out recruiters. Many who were recruited spoke no English at all."

None of that is specific to Iranians.

Same thing happens with other nationalities.

Now I'm imagining a Russian region where everyone wears shell suits, has tight permed hair and speaks in the Russian equivalent of a Scouse accent.

Were other countries increasing their immigration at that pace?

We could have cracked down, we didn't because the guys we were getting were highly skilled.

I couldn't find what I wanted, assuming you also couldn't, let's just agree to disagree.

Putin wants to preserve the Russian world, in other words its language, culture and faith. He does not want it trampled on in places like Ukraine by Western ideologues with their liberal impositions. To assume otherwise, is merely a projection of our own actions past and present.

Putin has stated it many times, that one can't impose their own standards on other cultures. In other words, he's fighting the World Economic Forum's ideologues and their new world order.

Adolf Hitler also wanted to preserve “German world” and even get some additional living space. The fact that he was not allowed to accomplish these goals must be such a travesty to you!

I didn't look for anything. I know enough to know that that rate of increase isn't remotely significant compared to other countries.

https://www.migrationpolicy.org/article/indian-immigrants-united-states-2019 - I don't want to derail the thread, but there is nothing unusual about our Iranian immigration.

Ah yes, a comedy from Kiev. As for me, I prefer the German comedies, since we can laugh with them rather than at them.

Israel slams Russia's foreign minister for comparing Zelenskyy to Hitler

    https://www.npr.org/2022/05/02/1095926607/lavrov-israel-zelenskyy-hitler

Conclusion - Lavrov is a nazi. And we all knew that Russia is a fascist state already.
