I would think the Canucks would have more say so than the USA. Have you ever driven from Vancouver to Alaska on that highway ? I did it once and never want to do it again. Actually I gave up and turned around and never made it to Alaska.

But you can actually see Russia from Alaska no matter what Media Matters or Tina Fey says. You really can.

It's not silly because a high speed train is being built to connect two Russian cities which will eventually connect with Moscow and then eastwards to Beijing. There are a lot of plans and developments in the works, and this is another one. So tell me Ronstar, you wouldn't want to drive to London?

    - - - Updated - - -

But if you go from Alaska to California it's all downhill, so it's easier. :oldman:

I don't drive to Nova Scotia, I fly.

why the hell would I want to drive to London?

    lol!!!!

and no, Russia will not be building a trainway/road to Alaska. Let alone to NYC.

    this is a silly joke.

It would be a strategically dumb idea, and I think Canada would think twice.

The greater threat might eventually be that the Chinese would gain access to it and send half of their population over here. You can transport many more people by train than plane or boat...and that includes troop transport.

Check out the Burma Railway the Japanese built during WWII.

But when you are going from California to Alaska it's all uphill.

Up north, down south, back east, out west.

I just have to ask this question, how do we know that Australia is really down under ?

Maybe we have always been looking at planet Earth while upside down and Canada and Alaska are actually down under ?

From space there is no upright or down. One can turn a space capsule 180 degrees and Australia could appear to be at the top of the world.

Oh so having people kill each other in wars then is smarter than building railroads and connecting people? Interesting!

we don't need a rail link to Siberia.

    no one would go there.

there's nothing to buy from them.

It would mean too much international cooperation and openness, eh. Yeah, better to keep the other sides of the oceans as isolated as possible. We're just not ready to be one world yet.

I won't, I just thought it's nice to start thinking of productive things like driving from one continent to the next, rather than destruction...destruction... destruction. Then there always South America. One can even drive from Buenos Aires to London? Just imagine all the banditos you'll meet on the road.

It's something that should be considered, though. Having to rely on aviation and shipping to get back and forth is not good at all.

The Burma Road wasn't the only highway built during WW ll. That highway I started out on going to Alaska was built during WW ll, better known as the Alaskan Highway. It was a major undertaking during WW ll.

Then there's the political correct history of the Alaska Highway.

We live in a PC world today.

the weather in Alaska can be horrible.

    this fantasy is silly.

Actually Ronstar if you know what's going on with China and the silk roads they have in the works with their high speed trains, you would know Russia is serious. Both countries have combined their industries, and China is able to build a city the size of Rome every two weeks. Of course it's going to take a little longer than that..

    sorry, that's not serious.

Its 50 miles across at its narrowest point.

why is it so stupid? it will generate 7 billion a year in freight alone? and will only cost 100 billion that makes good business sense if you ask me.

Actually there's a serious side to this. High speed trains can be a lot cheaper than tankers and cargo ships. It's a very ambitious project, but then all the projects that are in the works are ambitious. ..especially by China. If these things can be carried through without a war breaking out, or some kind of economic breakdown, it's going to be a way different world someday.

Currently, the average rate of cargo transportation in Russia does not exceed 280-300km/day: in the European Union it is 1,000km/day. The fuel consumption rate is 35-40% higher than in the EU.

It is claimed that the cost of road construction in Russia is 2.6 times higher than in Europe, three times higher than in the US and seven times higher than in China.

According to experts in the World Bank, the repair and overhaul of roads is in the range of $27,000-55,000/km, which is almost three times higher than in Finland, which has the same climatic conditions as Russia.

at present the annual rate of road building in Russia is estimated at only 200km, compared to 20,000km in China. There are more than 70,000 areas and districts in Russia which are not connected by roads.
    http://www.worldhighways.com/sectio...ia-seeks-outside-investment-in-road-building/

And even if the road was ever built - no one in sane mind will trust their cargo to thousands of miles of Russia's wilderness, bureaucracy, theft, corruption and incompetence, never mind their habbit of blackmailing political opponents and critics.

The road may be technically possible (if fully financed and built by the West of course) but its economic and political feasibility is zero (zilch, nill, ноль).
