Russia will target US jets in parts of Syria, defence ministry says

Russia says it will treat US-led coalition planes in Syria, west of the Euphrates, as targets.

The escalation comes after the US shot down a Syrian jet that had been dropping bombs near US-backed fighter jets.

In a statement, the defence ministry said that starting today it will track all jets and drones from the coalition in the area.

And it has demanded a full account of why the US military shot down a Syrian SU-22 on Sunday.

A statement from US Central Command said that the plane was shot down because it dropped bombs on US-backed rebels from the Syrian Democratic Front, near Tabqa in north Syria.

The US statement said that coalition aircraft stopped a "pro-regime advance" toward an "SDF-controlled town".

"Following the Pro-Syrian forces attack, the coalition contacted its Russian counterparts by telephone via an established 'de-confliction line' to de-escalate the situation.

"At 6.43pm, a Syrian regime SU-22 dropped bombs near SDF fighters south of Tabqa and, in accordance with rules of engagement and in collective self-defence of coalition partnered forces, was immediately shot down by a US F/A-18E Super Hornet.

"The coalition's mission is to defeat ISIS in Iraq and Syria."

Syria said earlier that the US-led Coalition had shot down one of its planes as it carried out a combat mission against Islamic State fighters.

Moscow said the US had failed to use the communication hotline to warn them about the downing of the plane.

"The command of the coalition forces did not use the established communication channel for preventing incidents in Syrian airspace," the defence ministry said.

Video footage obtained by Al-Masdar appears to show convoys of ISIS fighters fleeing the Syrian city of Raqqa untouched by the U.S. military, which is currently bombing that exact location. As Al-Masdar notes, despite having Kurdish and American drones hovering around the city of Raqqa, U.S. bombs are nowhere to be seen as hundreds of fighters pass safely. The release of this footage comes on the heels of accusations from both Russia and Iran that the U.S. is colluding with ISIS to allow the group’s safe passage into areas controlled by the Syrian government.

 

I sort of doubt they would let me fly a combat aircraft over Syria. But yeah, I would do it. There is ZERO chance a Russian would fire upon a US air craft. We have an army at their border, and waiting for them to screw up. Putin cares more about being a dictator, than he does about poking the tiger.

 

You want a war - go enlist first. There are not only pilots needed in Syria, you can fight there on foot, I am sure.

The Congress has NOT authorized a war in Syria against that country's sovereign government. Therefore, ANY act of war committed in Syria against the government is a CRIME.

Moreover, the UN Security Council has not authorized the USA to wage war against Syria's government, making the downing of a Syrian jet a unilateral breach of international law.

Even worse, this is being done to help "rebels" who Trump said during the campaign "we have no idea who they are" and that our biggest problem in Syria was ISIS, not Assad.

By attacking the SECULAR government of Syria, Trump is aiding the TERRORISTS who constitute the bulk of the rebel forces.

Easily the most disturbing aspect of this CRIMINAL escalation in Syria is how it is effecting our relationship with Russia, a NUCLEAR power. Things have gotten so bad that Russia is now treating US aircraft as potential targets in Syrian airspace. This is INSANE.

Americans and their Congressional representatives MUST stop Trump before something truly horrible happens.

I am supremely confidant Russians will not fire on a US aircraft until they are fired upon. They can rattle their sabers all they want but, it's been so long since Russia was in real war, I'm not even sure that saber comes all the way out anymore.

 

Your supreme confidence is reckless and extremely dangerous. You have no idea if the Russians will fire on US forces or not, and you haven't considered the possibility of human or computer error. During the cold war, the USA and Russia almost fired nukes at one another several times due to misunderstandings. Flying a bunch of fighter jets into the Russian airspace would increase the probability of a catastrophic error substantially. You are increasing the risk of a nuclear war for NOTHING.

 

I remember when Putin deployed what was reported was an incredibly sophisticated anti-aircraft tracking and missile system (after the Turks shot one of their planes down). Subsequently the US has launched waves of missiles that didn't get intercepted, Turks and Russians have confronted each other in the air and the Coalition has been conducting operations against daesh. I suppose the Russians have been ignoring all this activity, otherwise their vaunted anti-aircraft system seems a bit defficient.

Give me a break. Neither we nor they are North Korea. Full scale war is unlikely, even if one aircraft is shot down. The Russians are just factually in no position to start a war with the US, or NATO. Like I already said, Putin is a lot of terrible things, but stupid isn't one of them.
