Perfect playground for fielding and testing underwater drones, unarmed of course. Maybe set an inert limpet mine for them to find during the next hull check.

There are indications that in the '70's the Russians used a tracked underwater vehicle to venture into San Francisco Bay. The Ruskies have always been fascinated with "doomsday" weapons. It must be the drugs chased with vodka.
I worry more about their sloppy procedures in general leading to a major loss of fish.

 

They have a lot of rough weather/arctic coast line. Having a lot of subs makes more practical sense for their navy. Beyond that, they spy on us and we spy on them. Rinse and repeat. Occasionally someone gets caught in a very public way and the public stink eye contest starts. Rinse and repeat. I am not particularly worried about the Russians. Iran is the stickiest wicket the US needs to deal with at the moment IMHO. We won't, but we should.

 

And how many Ohio-class SSBN's are active and targeting the Russki homeland as I type this (as they have been doing for over four decades now)?

Interesting video - some good information - but his conclusions are all wrong. His assumptions/assessment of the future prospects for the Russian Economy were not good ones ..Russia has a huge chunk of land - Agriculture - Mining - Energy- and a huge Chinese- India market that is hungry for what Russia has - and the prices of these goods is going up.

The fellow completely missed the boat - not understanding that the Character of Military conflict has changed - significantly.. and Russia has positioned itself as the best in class towards that change - Russia and US will not be fighting each other - at least not directly - attacking each others homeland due to nukes.. same with China .. so one's conventional forces need not worry about that .. what Russia did with limited resources was build really good missiles - the first super sonic anti ship missile released in the mid 90's was at least a decade beyond anything we had .. and our ships had no defense.

You can build a whole lot of cruise missiles at 1 million a pop - for the price of a 15 Billion dollar aircraft carrier - Op Costs - and group.

We are now left with an obsolete Navy - against nations having this technology - and that technology is spreading .. advancing much faster than our ability to defend ...

He talks about Russia losing market share in some places - doesn't mention the US losing market share - in the real war that is going on - which is not military but economic - economic now the strongest piece on the geopolitical chessboard - and we are getting it handed to us by China Russia - and others.

This picture seems to be of one of the problem-plagued Russian "Yassen"-class boats, which took decades to develop, and were subject to many delays. It does not appear to be be one of the Belgorod 'Doomsday' boats, about which little is known for sure.

Incidentally, if reports are to be believed, the Belgorod submarine will feature a nuclear torpedo the size of a school bus, called the "Poseidon".

Russia is between Nigeria (151) and North Korea (153).

Actually, Russia slipped down to #154, but I doubt that they lose much sleep over it.... The USA comes in at #121.
