I was only 16 years old when the Merry Pranksters showed up in the L.A. area with their "Acid Test" which was just one huge LSD party.

I was into surfing and surfer girls not drugs in 1966.

Two years later LSD became illegal, a federal felony.

My observations over the decades was those I knew who used large quantities of LSD or abused drugs are all liberals or progressives today.

The question is, did the Merry Pranksters spiked the San Francisco water supply with LSD ?

It's a very interesting question, as someone who lives in Orange County and just paid $700k on a 1,200 sq ft home, I have asked this question many times over.

When you drive on the Westside of LA, it is an absolute paradise. But go anywhere else and it is absolutely disgusting and sometimes down right dangerous. Do we say "California is the most expensive and nicest place?" or is it those microcosms are the "most expensive and nicest place?"

Here is a list of the top 10 most expensive cities to live in.

    1 - New York
    2 - San Fransisco
    3 - Honolulu
    4 - Brooklyn
    5 - D.C.
    6 - Oakland
    7 - Seattle
    8 - Boston
    9 - Los Angeles
    10 - San Deigo

Here is a list of the top 10 homeless populations by city.

    1 - New York
    2 - Los Angeles
    3 - Seattle
    4 - San Diego
    5 - Las Vegas
    6 - D.C.
    7 - Chicago
    8 - San Fransisco
    9 - Honolulu
    10 - Portland

    -------------

8 of the top 10 are pretty much the same list, is this a coincidence? Or is it something deeper representing the politics of those cities?

I have heard some circles talk about how "rich people are taking advantage of poor people" to explain the list, but I wonder if it is "poor people actually taking advantage of rich people" instead.

Orange Sunshine was produced by the "Brotherhood of Eternal Love" in Laguna Beach in the OC. The "Brotherhood of Eternal Love" was associated with Timothy Leary.

    The Hippie Mafia.

Augustus Owsley Stanley manufactured LSD in the San Francisco Bay area and the Hells Angeles were in control of the distribution of Owsley's acid

Nancy Hamren and I went to McCheznie Junior High in Oakland, then Oakland High. Bill Arnold was the love of Nancy’s life. She was the first girl I ever kissed. In 1966 we became roommates on Pine Street, where we partied with two members of the Jefferson Airplane when they visted the two Swedish Airline Stewardesses down the hall. We later lived in a commune called ‘Idle Hands’ with the two daughter of Jayrd Zoerthian who has been titled ‘The Last Bohemian’. We parties at the Zorthian Ranch when we were eighteen.

Nancy dated Stanley Augustus Owsley, and went on a double date with my sister Christine, with the LSD chemist Nick Sand. Christine had come to live with me at Idle Hands. The man behind Owsley, who grew up with Tim Scully, was my patron. These people are associated with the Brotherhood of Eternal Love who I took LSD with in Laguna Beach.

Nancy lived on Ken Kesey’s ranch and is now a co-owner of the Springfield Creamery made famous by Nancy’s Yogurt. I have been on the bus. This is the history I and my late sister are, and will forever be, famous for. We were at the epicenter of something truly unique, something that changed the world forever. I have been recording my Bohemian Roots that led to the experiment to end all experiments. It is my goal to legitimize the so called Hippie Movement so it can go foreword without the drugs.

    Jon Presco

Shortly after high school, in 1966, Nancy moved to Haight Ashbury in San Francisco to attend college. “It was a wonderful, exciting time,” she says. “The civil rights movement and Vietnam protests, and free speech movements were happening, and a big part of this consciousness-raising was a discussion of natural foods.”
By 1969 she was living in Mill Valley with her sweetheart Gordon Adams. Gordon was a friend of Ken Kesey, counterculture leader and author of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Ken owned a farm outside of Eugene, Ore., where many of his band of Merry Pranksters occasionally stayed. He asked Gordon and Nancy to come to Oregon to help take care of the farm while he was in London recording stories with the Beatles.
Post Woodstock, when Ken Kesey decided to close his farm to guests, Nancy needed a new home and a new job. “I heard Ken’s brother, Chuck, had a little creamery in Springfield, Ore., and was looking for a bookkeeper,” she says. At the creamery, Nancy soon found herself sharing her knowledge of making yogurt. “It was a time when we all were focused on taking our destiny into our own hands; the Whole Earth Catalogue was our beacon.” she says. “We shared all kinds of things: how to build a cabin; how to make your own bread; how to get rid of ants the natural way. In San Francisco, I had had access to lots of good yogurts,” she says. “But in Oregon, the majority of commercial yogurt was the over-sweetened variety.”...

Where did you find a home for $700K in the OC Draco ?

Are you still behind the "Orange Curtain" ?

I grew up in the tree section of Manhattan Beach, a family of 6, a father, mother two brothers and a sister in a 1.200 sq ft craftsman bungalow.

Meh, actually 1,280 sq ft in Laguna Niguel about a year or so ago for $710, zillow claims it is $790 now but.... whatever.

2bd/2bth, 2 car garage, backyard with view of the canyon and a hot tub. So far it's just me and my Akita! MIGHT have a second guest coming to live with us in the next year or so, we'll see how she works out. ;)

    Great first home!

Manhattan Beach is in LA county and is pretty much where my GF lives. As the "Orange Curtain" basically is just the LA/OC line from what I know, yes, I am "behind" it.

The Orange Curtain was moved from the L.A. Co./OC line some years ago. Now the 405 is the Orange Curtain.

    Orange Curtain

Previously the Orange Curtain referred to the border of Orange county and L.A. county but it is getting more commonly known and anything running along the 55 and the 405 freeways.

The filth that is LA has reached down into such cities as Garden Grove, Fullerton, Placentia, Yorba Linda, Buena Park, and of course, Santa Ana.

South of the curtain (cities such as Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, Mission Viejo, Laguna Niguel, Irvin, etc) life is still nice and crime is low. Many people refuse to even cross this line because it takes weeks to get the stench out of their cars.

South Orange County is so beautiful and has just about everything but sometimes you just gotta cross the Orange Curtain to find a really seedy nudie bar or a taco truck.

Huh, interesting. I did a google search before I answered you and all the most recent articles I found still just said "the OC/LA line".

But I can see what they are saying, basically Central OC (costa mesa, tustin, santa ana, orange) are INCREDIBLY hispanic and don't look like much else of OC.

But based on your article yes, I live behind the orange curtain as I am 1.7 miles from the beach "as the crow flies".

And yes, I definitely agree that "South Orange County" is MUCH more beautiful than the rest, heck, I even have my own private toll based freeway to avoid the "riff raff"!!! :D

    ---EDIT---

And yes, our last strip club was removed 10 or so years ago .... to my 26 YO's much chagrin .....

Usually trash does not command such a premium. I kinda thought the whole free market idea was that supply and demand were rationalized be price ....more demand , higher price. So doesnt that imply that there is a high demand to live in that **** hole?

Why do I need to live there to determine if it is a nice place or a ****hole?

Streets littered with feces, syringes, and homeless is a pretty good indication that it is a ****hole.

Just wondering what made you an aficionado since I do know people that live there and have no plans of moving, it's just a bad phase they are going through since gentrification took ahold to push poor people out of an area..yeah rich folks, ain't they grand?

Thing is, when you eliminate the trash, the druggies, the homeless, the lunatics both inside city hall and outside it, and the - ah, waste material that keep accumulating there, SF is pretty nice. I remember it in the 70's and 80's, beautiful city. But the negatives such as I listed and others besides have overtaken the positives and the city - I think the last time I visited it a few years back I clearly remember thinking this place has passed some kind of intangible point of no return.

What's keeping property values so high there right now? Darned if I can figure that out. That bubble should have burst awhile ago.

If you like feces, syringes, the homeless, gays, high taxes, high cost of living and unconstitutional gun laws, then it's the place for you.

In Europe people are taking whizzes on airplane galley floors. There's a video of a woman taking a dump on a restaurant floor and flinging it at the cashier. When you gotta go you gotta go!
