I think all of that is one reason why the Left has so watered down the teaching of history so that youngsters no longer recognize the inherent perils of either Socialism or Marxism. Everything is now about cultural relevance and what women did for fun during the Dark Ages.

It is, I corresponded with the author after he was released due to international pressure and moved to Spain.

"Documents Castro's horrific abuse of political prisoners. Many were imprisoned for years under unspeakable living conditions for merely being disillusioned by communism and Castro's betrayal of the revolution. Valladares heroically endured beatings, starvation, torture, and forced labor for 22 years before winning his freedom."

All for making a critical comment about Castro at work. But literacy was up.

As I asked before, how bad would things have to be here if 10% of us (33,000,000) left the country? If Bernie wins we may find out.

They have been using Zinn's "A People's History of the United States" as their US history book. Take a look at that sometime. Scary to realize that this is what is being taught to our young students in the public schools.

Clownish supporters of communism and Cuba usually cite Cuba’s “advanced medical system” ... where hospitals routinely run out of aspirin and band aids.

But, but, ... Michael Moore wants the US to be as good as Cuba. He's a real sicko.

Sounds like Solzhenitsyn - he wound up in the Soviet Gulag for making a crack about Stalin’s mustache.

Bernie's base won't be bothered by it. Remember how Barack Obama all but offered to go to bed with the Castro brothers, but only AFTER he 'won' re-election? Our political Left was very happy about that. But Bernie is going to alienate a vast number of people in Florida who do vote. He's probably just handed Trump his second term; that is if Commie Bernie does take the Dem Party's nomination.

If the Cubans enmass did not want Castro and socialism they would have revolted and removed him with eager help from the mighty giant. ..us!
Yet when our CIA gave them the chance we couldnt get enough Cubans to join in.

Bernie is supporting the people of Cuba in having the govt they want. And if we had allowed that and treated Cuba like we treat other nations and had normal relations with them it would have been better for the Cubans.

At the end of the communist revolution we should have normalized relations with Cuba.

We had no trouble enriching and enabling communust china!

So treating Cuba as we have is incoherent and crazy ass behavior .A tale told by an idiot!

Sanders is right once again .

Cuba's problem is they didnt want our elites to own Cuba as they enriched themselves and threw Cubans a few scraps like feeding the dogs. You see the same with Venezuela .

There's a problem with your logic. It ignores what it took to enact, and keep, socialism. Why do you think that every country that has tried to enact a socialist form of government has ended up a dictatorship? Like they say, the road to hell is paved with good intentions. So yes, Castro introduced literacy programs, no one would say that's a bad thing... but what was the cost to get those programs going? There's a cost to everything. You take from one thing in order to build something else. That is the nature of life. And if you take more than the benefit that is given then it becomes a net negative. Socialism invariably ends up taking more than what it gives. That's why it fails. That's why it ends up a dictatorship. Because the people see that they are giving a lot, while getting little in return. But those that believe in socialism always fail to see that they are taking more than they are giving. They can't understand why people are upset or getting upset. So they enact policies to counter those people. Which ends up taking more. Which makes more people upset. It then becomes a cycle that in the end becomes a dictatorship.

I'm quite sure that Castro et al originally had good intentions. They wanted what was best for their people. But they believed in their ideology so much that it blinded them to reality and ended up becoming very bad people.

A Marxist propagandist masquerading as a historian. Little wonder him and that other Marxist charlatan Chomsky got along so well...

Is that why the North Koreans don't result? When the government has all the power and the people are disarmed, it doesn't matter what the people want.

Because JFK reneged on his promise of military aid to the freedom fighters.

LOL, how would you know what they want? Was there a free election I missed?

Why did the LW protest Apartheid South Africa but praise Cuba, a far worse human rights violator?

    What 'end'? I wish.

I doubt they'll agree in FL.

The Communist Party line, right there, sickening.

Cubans do not have the government they want. Cuba is not a democracy.

The CIA tried to enable a revolution and a Dem President weighed in, let the Cubans land at the Bay of Pigs, and then cut off the promised air support.

Thanks for being honest. I suspect many Bernie fans are also fans of Castro and Communism.
