    1) what makes you think they could?
    2) Even if they could launch a "few nukes" the U.S. has a "few ABMs"

No nation has a launch on warning capability or policy. Neither the U.S. nor the Soviet Union had one during the Cold War. President Carter himself said that launch on warning was not possible.

And I'm pretty certain that the nuclear arsenal and its support systems of today are no more advanced than the best the U.S.S.R. deployed.

If the Chinese had plans to "launch on warning" they wouldn't be bothering to build mobile ICBMs.

And most Americans would survive a nuclear exchange anyway.

most nukes pointed at the USA would take out our major cities.

only morons in the country would survive.

attacking U.S. cities would do the Chinese no good. All it would do is outrage the U.S. so much that the U.S. would undoubtedly launch a genocidal scale assault on China. If the Chinese are as smart as you claim they would know that.

On the flip side it is one reason I do not believe the U.S. would ever attempt to use nuclear weapons against Chinese or Russian cities.

    It is called common sense.

if the USA attacks Chinese missile sites with nukes they will respond with nukes against our cities. Just deal with it and stop fantasizing about nuclear war

And what would the Chinese gain from this action? I thought you claimed the Chinese were smart?

MAD is a geopolitical concept. Not an actual military one.

    It's also a valid point.

We've used nukes on civilians twice, and the idea that you wouldn't use them on civilians is ridiculous. You don't have to like the idea, I hate it, but it's always been a key feature of the weapon.

While I disagree with you about the likely origin of COVID19, I certainly do agree that a nuclear war with China is unimaginable, given the severity of the damage done -- so far. Truth... I think it was released on the world because of negligence, stupidity, and bureaucratic ineptitude -- not as a deliberate attack (although it certainly is feasible).

A far better tactic on our part than a 'hot' war would be to put together a 'coalition of the damaged' and for all nations to refuse to sell China any food at all! Hint: China's land is so badly suited for food-growing agriculture that only about 13% of any of it is even arable! When 1.4 BILLION Chinese start going hungry, we might find that Xi Jinping and his cohort in Beijing might step up with 'better behavior', and appropriate REPARATIONS for what China has caused throughout the world!

Your plan is interesting. But if we make the Chinese too desperate, watch out... But yes, I'd favor sanctions, including because they delayed by 3 weeks the notification to the WHO in order to gobble up for themselves all the PPE, ahead of other countries.

As for the origin of the virus, scientific analysis of its genome has established with no possible doubt that it is a virus that naturally jumped from bats to humans, and there is no hallmark of any manipulation whatsoever, including for gain of function. This virus does not come from the Wuhan Virology Lab. So I don't see exactly what you are getting at regarding negligence, stupidity, and ineptitude. Actually China did a very good job containing it. It's the other countries that didn't do such a good job. Did you know that the virus was found in samples of sewage water collected in early November in Brazil and kept for other research purposes? Even factoring in the 3-week delay, before that the virus was already circulating everywhere, unbeknownst to even the Chinese.

As per the Admin of this site, suggestions that it was man-made and deliberately unleashed on humankind belong to the Conspiracy Theory forum, not to the COVID-19 forum, so if that's what you believe, kindly go there to post that belief, please.

~ Of course . It's just coincidence that China did not allow any investigation of the Wuhan laboratory and the outbreak started in Wuhan.
Anyone who believes China "did a very good job containing it" must not be aware of the spread into the rest of the world - including the U.S.
:blushes:´ Some folks do indeed belong in the Conspiracy Theory Forum . [IMG]

Containing it for themselves. It didn't spread there, in China. They got 84,000 cases and 4,600 deaths, for a country that size. That's a pretty good result. Sure, maybe they are cooking the numbers, that's possible, but I don't think any westerner has any evidence that the virus is widespread, there.

Of course I'm aware of the spread to the rest of the world. Like I said it was circulating since November (actually late November, not early November like I thought, but still, way before the virus was first spotted in China). Here:
    https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.06.26.20140731v1

Again, ideas that the virus came from the Wuhan lab belong in the Conspiracy Theory forum, as per the Admin of this site, not as per this humble poster, me. It is a conspiracy theory since the scientific evidence debunks it. You should feel free to believe in conspiracy theories and post about them, but just, this is not the forum that is appropriate for them, again, according to the Admin of this site.

I would be willing to accept your idea that it's all just 'conspiracy theory' pablum -- as soon as I see definitive, factual, plain-English tracts that prove conclusively the COVID-19 virus did not originate in a Chinese laboratory. I notice that you didn't post any links....

Bats? Really? Oh, wait, I thought it was pigs... but, no, then it was some kind of 'anteater' creature called a "Pangolin", and then it was "squat-toilets". Hmm... sounds like a lot of conspiracy theory stuff to me! Especially when there was a Bio-safety Level 4 lab just a 'stone's throw' away from where all this got started in the first place -- in Wuhan, China!

[IMG]. "The squat-toilets are real... the rest of it...who knows?!"

Sure, I can post a link, but I don't think showing the truth to conspiracy theorists does any good. They will ALWAYS obfuscate and deflect. But you want a link? Here is one. Read attentively. Yeah, yeah, there's a bio-safety level 4 lab, but unfortunately for your conspiracy theory that's a coincidence because genomic analysis shows no tampering.

~ Cremation & funeral records show approx. 50,000. deaths just in Wuhan area alone.
Satellite images show big increase in activity at Wuhan hospital as early as November - records show respiratory failure / pneumonia in patients - the same time China began purchasing FDA approved masks and gowns.
No - most are not taking anything from the China government as "official" fact. But I suppose a few are.
