I think the Dems missed an opportunity to side with MTG and help throw Speaker Johnson out so Americans could see how Republicans are truly incapable of governing and compromise.
For that to be sold as true, it has to actually be true. Those separate votes on Ukraine aid, Israeli aid, border security funds and Taiwan aide suggest that there are times where this Speaker will work with Dems and moderate Pubs, and yes keep his word. That means we should do the same. Kevin McCarthy was simply too spineless, and too scrupeless for ANYONE to trust. We did the right thing by voting to oust McCarthy, but we also did the right thing by voting not to oust Johnson.
I think the Dems have the speaker they want because he's doing everything the Dems push for. The vote today is nothing but confirmation that Johnson is a bought and paid for RINO. He's nothing but a white Hakeem Jeffries that plays the Bible card to cover his dirty ass.
At least you're honest in saying that you don't want a moderate or progressive but someone from the far right-wing. I would want somebody from far left-wing but know that's not realistic or compromising, so would settle from someone in the middle but at least leans a little my way (Pelosi, for example). So just think of Johnson as your Pelosi and suck it up like I did.
And being liberal/progessive doesn't mean being far-left. What's your point? Mine was Republicans are stuck with their version of Pelosi, who both realize that they have to compromise.
Hmmm, I think I see Republicans voting for Jeffries before MTG. The only downside MAY have been optics for Dems politically by stirring the pot/helping to create vacancy. Frustrating that Republicans can do something like that and get rewarded for it.
RINOS would. But RINOS are just Democrats. Pelosi never compromised, who are you trying to fool? Liberals/progressives aren't fiscally conservative.....which is why there is no middle ground with real conservatives. I don't give a crap about the Bible thumpers who claim to be Republican yet the spend more than Democrats. They're the worst RINOS ever, equivalent to black Democrats playing the race card every chance they get.
Republicans label all their moderates RINOs because they are not right-wing extremists. The Democratic party keeps their left-wing members like AOC in a corner so they can govern. Suggesting Speaker Johnson is a Democrat shows no grasp on facts. Stop letting your feelings dictate reality.
No, it would be more entertaining to repeat the speaker musical chairs. It has a side benefit of interrupting House business. The less congress does the better.
That is NOT what Democrats stand for. The objective is a working congress. Contributing to the chaos is destructive of our American system. That means negotiations, where both sides are involved and the result doesn't satisfy everyone - because in some things it can't. We negotiate with those who disagree - not with those who we already agree with.
They weren’t rewarded. This was a smart move because it showed the republicans as destabilising agents and democrats as being workhorses. This election will be decided by independents who don’t care about R or D but rather “who will work for me?”
If you want clowns go to a circus. The rest of the world wants functioning government - one that gets roads built and keeps schools open etc etc etc. Weird how some want “small government” whilst being fine with interfering with reproduction and sexual identity
House Democrats put the good of the country ahead of partisan political cat fights . In doing so , they neutered MTG and sent a signal to House Republicans that enough is enough. The business of government is more important than one self-serving, ignorant, arrogant, radical.
I totally get what u guys are saying. I just don't think it matters too much this late in election year and also wished the Democratic party took better advantage of the situation politically. At least boast about how they were able to compromise and work with GOP by voting for their Speaker. I don't know. Maybe they did. Maybe they're waiting. Maybe they want to keep on down-low. I also wish the 'mainstream media' would have run with it but just crickets.
They have the majority. They get the speaker. He's helped to overcome the prior pattern of getting absolutely nothing bipartisan done. The next guy would not necessarily be as competent/useful.
I also want functioning government and it doesn't function to my satisfaction because it is too large, incompetent, unmanageable and corrupt. Federal government doesn't operate schools let alone keep them open. Reproduction and sexual identity? LOL. Gender isn't an identity. It is a biological feature of every person.
Depends on how one looks at this. If one just wants to make a statement, throw the House into chaos where nothing gets accomplished between now and Jan 2025 in hopes of regaining control, then this was the wrong thing to do. If one wanted to get something accomplished in the house between now and Jan 2025, to maintain some governance in the workings of the house, then this was the right thing to do. It’s a matter of perspectives. Election wise, the generic congressional ballot has the democrats up by 1.2 points which is within the MOE. Meaning who controls the house is a pure tossup for next year. Either party could gain or lose 5-8 seats. https://www.realclearpolling.com/polls/state-of-the-union/2024/generic-congressional-vote Going district by district, the republicans have 21 seats at risk of switching, the democrats 24. Again, indicating a tossup election as to which party controls the house. Or one can look at this as 390 house seats are currently safe for whichever party now holds them. In reality, there’s 45 house seats up for election where the voters could make a change to who is their congressman, the remaining 390 the election is just a formality. No changes there.
