Should We Make a Federal Holiday Honoring President Trump?

Of course slavery was the overwhelmingly important issue in the Civil War. There is plenty of evidence for that, not least the private and public statements of Southern leaders.

On the other hand, it's absolutely true that the North, officially, did not fight to end slavery, only to maintain the Republic.

But wise old Lincoln knew, however, that the unity of the Republic would eventually mean the end of slavery, and had an even wider significance.

He knew that on this continent, we had brought forth a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.

He understood that the war was a test of whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, could long endure.

People abroad knew that too. I get a weekly conservative British magazine, The Spectator, which has just celebrated its 190th anniversary.

The current issue features articles and editorials from its past. Maybe people on this Forum would like to read one, written at the time of the Civil War. As they note, "On the outbreak of the American Civil War, the magazine opposed the rest of the British press and supported the North against the slave-owning South."

The duty of England and the American crisis

The time has arrived when the national will on the American quarrel ought to be expressed. A party, numerous in Parliament and powerful in the press, is beginning to intrigue for the recognition of the South. They are aided by the fears of the cotton dealers, who dread an intermission of their supplies, by the anxiety of commercial men, who see their best market summarily closed, and by the abiding dislike of the aristocracy for the men and manners of the North. For the moment, their object is apparently to deprecate debate. They dare not as yet brave openly the prejudices of freemen, or advocate a cause based on antagonism to all that Englishmen hold dear. But they hope, if the nation can only be kept silent, they may talk the administration into acts which will commit us ultimately to the Confederated States.


There is too much reason to fear that the government, though certainly not prejudiced in favour of the south, allows itself to be deceived as to the true state of public feeling. But the ministry will make a fatal mistake if it confounds calm with indifference, or believes that the people would accept favour to the South either with apathy or applause. With the policy of neutrality, provided it be real, Englishmen of all opinions may concur. But if the neutrality is to be only official, if our ‘moral aid’ is to be lent to one side or the other, if the sympathies of England are to be formally expressed, there can be no reasonable doubt as to our side.

Every consideration alike of morality and convenience impels us irresistibly towards the North. There is no need to employ the vulgar argument that, caeteris paribus, it is as well for a state without friendships to be on the winning side. The power of England in the world is based on opinion rather than on strength. It is as the unswerving friends of orderly freedom that we secure in every country the support of its noblest minds. Do ‘the principles of civil and religious liberty’, so earnestly pressed on Spain, extend only
to white men and Europeans, or is human freedom to be our policy only when convenient to customers? It may not be wise or even right to declare war to redress a wrong but if England is to retain her position her sympathy must be with the slave.

The quarrel, cover it with cotton as we may, is between freedom and slavery, right and wrong, the dominion of God and the dominion of the Devil, and the duty of England, we submit, is clear. It is to refuse to recognise the Confederacy, even if in that mysterious Providence which occasionally confounds faith, slavery should for the moment win the game.


Everyone knew it was about slavery, although no doubt many of the brave men, including some of my ancestors, who fought for the South didn't think they were fighting for slavery, but for the right to rule themselves. And 99% of the white men who fought against the South would no doubt be condemned as racists today by the vile little campus shites who go around screeching about 'racism'.

But we shouldn't doubt what was at issue, and we should be glad that the good guys won.

 

Well trumpettes do exhibit some cult like tendancies which is understandable in partisan tribes, but the actual cults driving the trumpian defense are simply Trumpland's allies of convenience - the radical racist right wing fascist fringe.

And holiday or not the accusation wont' be quelled until those scum are once again relegated to the cesspool slime from which they arose.

 

How about "Awesome Presidents Day"?

I think we should make a federal holiday honoring Jewish-Americans and their wonderful contributions to society. Then let's make Black History month a federally recognized event and throw some awards and maybe holidays in there.

 

Keep telling yourself that. Oh and be sure and say “how very white of you” to every white person you know. Make my argument for me.

 

Government spending has increased to 4.4 trillion per year. The deficit will be 1 trillion next year. He is running our nation into the ground for short-term gain.

 

We get a day off for presidents already. I think its enough.

But you phrased it in such a way that I am the archetypical white person. Any other white person that you don’t have a problem with is acting ‘less white’. You have a problem with whiteness. Makes me wonder what ethnicity you are. The almonds are certainly activating.
