I was treating them as equals and with respect. I just wanted to hear the professor.

I didn't take it as racist comments at all. At the core of what she is saying, I totally agree. I also hate listening to people talk like experts about other people that they have no first hand life experience with.
As a 53 year old white male from Seattle I have no idea what a black girl from anywhere USA goes through in her life. So I got no right to express any old thing that comes to mind.
I see poor people who talk about the rich and vice versa all the time and it's clear that neither have a clue what their talking about. I think she has a valid point.

 

If you can switch the races or gender in a sentence and it suddenly becomes racist, the original sentence is also racist. People should try to learn from the experiences of others and come to an understanding but entire demographics should never be told they are not allowed to talk.

Imagine the backlash “Should black girls still be allowed to talk” would generate?
The school would step in, retractions and apologies would be issued, the paper would likely be disbanded, calls for resignation of the university president would be everywhere, demonstrations would occur...

I think that is true enough, and well said. However I believe she was clearly posing a rhetorical question for effect. It's a common enough technique that, thats how I took it anyway. And she mentioned stuff that I have noticed many, many times. I don't see any big deal, and lots of people enjoy being outraged.

somewhat agree, like black people talking about white privilege, how easy all whites have it, ect...they have not lived in the shoes of all white people... what they really mean is rich people, cause most poor white people are no different then poor black people - but that is different then just talking, that is putting down another race to try and make yourself feel better

same is true of slavery, most whites did not own slaves, rich people owned slaves

a rich white or black person has more opportunity and privilege then a poor white or black person
