Recently I finished reading Reagan: the inside story by Edwin Meese and I noticed some similarities between the treatment of Reagan and Trump.

Reagan disagreed with the SALT treaty and instantly some in the state department put out a cable saying disregard Reagan....

Iran contra was their Mueller report in that they had basically nothing and Dems under carter offered more to terrorists than Reagan did. Also nothing that happened Violated Boland amendments.

There was a push in media to get out all Reaganites in favor of establishment Republicans same with Trump (Bannon, Kushner, Miller)

Also Reagan's Supreme Court nominee Bork was the victim of character assignation just like Kavanaugh....

Seems like this is all a recurring theme

I'd like to hear from some conservatives who were around for both Reagan and Trump.

Who had it worse in the media?

Who was treated better by the opposition?

    How about internationally?

I understand its 2 years of Trump, vs 8 of Reagan.

Not even close. Reagan is treated far better but than again, he doesn't have the personality of a child.

From the book they constantly took Reagan out of context like his big spending cuts on nutrition. They cut the automatic cost of living increases not the programs themselves. Apparently there was lots of leaking going on in the administration as well. I had underlined interesting things but I lent the book out. One incident in the book talked of Reagan sending Jeane Kirkpatrick with a letter for a foreign leader and the state Department sent a cable telling the Leader to disregard Reagan's letter.

Seems like the establishment didn't much care for Reagan's policies and tried to undercut them whenever possible

    No doubt.

He was lambasted (by communists and leftists)

But also loved by almost everyone (reference election results).

Notice it's the same type of rhetoric that was used against Kavanaugh and Gorusch

Reagan's SDI (which helped the collapse of the USSR as they couldn't compete with US military programs and feed their nation ) was coined a joke and it wouldn't work..... kinda like a wall huh

"Another common criticism of SDI was that it was simply not a feasible project. For example, the day after Reagan announced SDI, Senator Ted Kennedy dismissed his speech as “misleading Red-scare tactics and reckless Star Wars schemes,” indirectly coining SDI’s Hollywood nickname. A New York Timesop-ed similarly noted, “It remains a pipe dream, a projection of fantasy into policy….There's no statesmanship in science fiction.”

Scientists also expressed their doubts about SDI. In 1985, for example, physicist Wolfgang Panofsky wrote in Physics Today, “ABM defense technology deserves further research within treaty limits, but the ‘Star Wars’ program is too large, too political, raises false hopes and poses grave dangers to national and world security.”

The media was tough on Reagan and are tougher on Trump. Reagan was good at deflecting the media's petty criticism by using humor. Trump has the personality of a street fighter -- you criticism him and he hits back harder. I like both leaders, voted for both, and wouldn't want to change either one because they are not after power but after what is best for the U.S. As 2020 approaches remember Reagan won every state except one in a great landslide. The people saw through the petty media as they do today. Trump in 2020 to MAGA.

Look how the dems and the media treated Bork, Thomas, and Kavanaugh. Bork tried to be a nice guy and got crushed. Thomas and Kavanaugh took no silly crap and were approved. Then compare that to Kagan and Sotomayor who were treated like royalty. The dems and the media have no shame. It's all about ideology to them.

Trump is being treated far worse by the media and opposition party. That’s partly because of the fact the media is much larger, with cable. As far as the opposition party, the Dems were not radicalized back then. While wrong on many issues they were still opposed to socialism and realized the horrors it can do. Today, they are all radicals. The Dems of the Reagan years are now part of the gop

You must be joking. Bork had a checkered past including bigoted writing about the Civil Rights Act and an opposition to Roe. 6 Repubs voted against his confirmation to the SC.

There are also huge differences. Reagan switched parties once in 1962 and stayed a Republican for the rest of his life. Trump has switched parties eight times, going back and forth being a Democrat, a Reform Party member, an independent and in 2012 became a Republican for the third time in his life.

Reagan had a political philosophy, an ideology he carried with him forever, Trump basically has none. Reagan had a very likable personality, he never created feuds, called people names, threw temper tantrums. Reagan let personal political attacks roll off this back, sometimes he came back with a self-depreciating joke that nullified any personal political attack. Trump isn't a bit likable and takes everything personal.

Reagan's first term job approval average was 50%, his second term job approval average 55%. His highest job approval was 68%. Trump so far has an average approval rating of 41% with a high of 46% which occurred in February of 2017. Reagan's lowest approval rating was on in January of 1983 at 35%, but he improved to 61% come reelection time, Nov 1984. Trump's low 35% August of 2017, since then he recovered to 44% today. He hasn't hit the 46% mark since February of 2017.

When Iran-Contra hit, Reagan had built up so much good will among the public that the Democrats in congress wouldn't even think about impeaching him. Trump hasn't built up any good will among the public at large, he has just his avid supporters.

Perhaps most important is Reagan behaved presidential, not like a wrestler out of the WWE. This I think was/is very important especially to the independent voter. Those non-affiliated, less to non-partisan voters who don't pay much attention to the daily grind of government.

Reagan averaged 35% job approval among Democrats, 53% among Independents and 91% among Republicans throughout his eight years. Trump so far has averaged 9% among Democrats, 39% with independents and 85% among Republicans.

There's more, but this will suffice.

Reagan had plenty of detractors, but nothing like Trump. Funny, now when I think about it -- I liked Reagan and dislike Trump. So, my bias has a lot to do with my perceptions. Even so, Reagan had a couple of BIG FAUBAR's. The S&L scandal/wipe-out and the biggest one day loss in the DJIA in history. That sucked.

Still, Reagan had a high likability factor, Trump just makes normal people gag and reach for a vomit bag. Come to think of it, a LOT went wrong during Reagan years, but not because of scandal, more about stupid. I lived in farm country (again) and something like over half the family farms turned into vapor. Then there were the BIG deficits culminating in a five trillion dollar debt and that's when the dollar was real money. Still, I liked the guy. Most of us did. That helped keep the media off Ron's ass. That and beating the crap out of the Soviets.

Ron wasn't terribly bright, but he had his sh*t together better than any guy I ever saw.

Reagan had the beginning signs of dementia in his last two years... the press wasn't nearly as observant as they should have been.

Trump waves around Secret Documents in front of the press ... the dude SHOULD be scrutinized by the press and the FBI more closely. He's a danger to the country.

Similar treatment of Reagan and Trump

Presidential Historians rate these 2 as the worst Presidents ever

I can understand Trump getting that distinction however surprised at Reagan's standing

You hit on the biggest difference, likability. Reagan was well liked, even by Democrats. Tip O'Neal the Democratic Speaker of the house once said, "I disagree with most of Reagan's policies, but I sure like the guy." Reagan never went around creating feuds and making enemies or resort to name calling and throwing temper tantrums. Reagan let most of the political personal attacks roll off his back or he made them moot by telling a self-depreciating joke. Reagan behaved very presidential, Trump behaves more like a wrestler in the WWE pre-fight press conference than the occupant of the Oval Office.

Reagan had built up a ton of good will among the public at large. That when Iran-Contra hit, no one, not even the hardest core Democrat ever thought about impeachment. Trump hasn't built up any good will at all with the public. All you hear when his name is mentioned is impeachment. This all boils down to Trump's uncouth, obnoxious, childish and very unpresidential behavior. That brash, in your face persona will probably lead to his doom come reelection.

Yes their personalities are different that's obvious..... As far as their politics the establishment didn't like Reagan's ideas and viewed them as horrible (tax cuts , Hardline rhetoric to ussr). There was also insane amounts of leaks and establishment backstabbing going on during his administration. Also his supreme Court nominee was the first to be treated so poorly
