Or those self service tube testers to save yourself hiring a TV repairman. Now theres a job you dont hear much about anymore.

TV breaks. Me: "Hello, Samsung... my 55 inch smart tv just stopped working." Samsung: "Solly, time to throw away and buy another!"

I researched the net and found I could fix it myself... for $250 in parts. Bought a new 55 in for $279.

    And they call this progress?

So you live for what " somebody " once told you.? Not even the best
of Kids rely on that { what a Parent told them }.
Think Bob Dylan. He couldn't get away from home fast enough.
left right after he graduated high school. He literally wandered around
like a Rolling Stone.Wanted in the worst way to locate Woody Guthrie
and live with him.Nursemaid him if need be.
The reason Bob Dylan was always a bad interviewee was his
    disdain for small talk and gabbing about oneself { hisself }
Plus he was Very self-made.Nobody got his career kick-started.
He earned every bit of it by his Lonesome.Which is part and parcel of
manhood. The ability to pick yourself up by the bootstraps and make the
best of it.No whining or complaining,Just perserverance and maybe a little
    luck.

Yep, creative folks often get inspiration from leading partially or wholly hard lives.

Tubes were before my time. I just recall the little 13 inch TVs had those horizontal and vertical knobs on the back when I was a kid.

Y'see men folk are differern't than woman folk.Is what.
At least used to be.In my day. They supposed to be the work
horse and the provider. Not a Hairdresser or Fashion designer.
That is why for many decades throughout the Golden Age of
Cinema, acting was frowned upon by most Parents. It was seen as
haphazard, unreliable and often frivolous. Not real work.
More like playing a game of
I'm halfway thru the Martin Scorsese Documentary :
    - No Direction Home -
In it he starts with Dylan in High School and then being in a band.
His love of music { at that time kind of Rock-a-billy and Folk music
mixed with Country }. He was visiting a fellow musician around the time
he dropped out of college { Just didn't care about going to class as he
    stayed up late playing gigs }.This fellow musician had a huge LP { record }
collection. He let Dylan crash at his pad one weekend and Dylan had the
place to himself. When the guy got back he was stunned.Dylan managed
to find his Very precious { almost non-existent } Woody Guthrie record
collection.Dylan walked off with most of it.This musician guy decided to
hunt down Dylan and beat the livin' crap out of.He found Robert Zimmerman
as he carried around a bowling pin as intimidation weapon.
They ended up debating and arguing and changing the subject.
I guess Dylan was good at slithering out of confrontation.
Dylan headed out west to locate Guthrie who by that time was in
    very poor health.

And you had to get up and change the channels. But it wasn't hard. We only had three of them.

My aunt's house was like that when I was young. No cable and those giant UFO satellite dishes didn't really work well in her area due to the mountains or iron in the ground or something. She had one of those funky rooftop V-Shaped antennas. During the late afternoon you could get 4 channels, but two of them were CBS and after the sun went down it was CBS or PBS and that was it.

I get it.Because Bugs wouldn't hear of it..Just the thought of
buying, then using rabbit ears was enough to cause the farm animals
    to revolt.Like in - Animal Farm -.
    I like Bob Dylans excuse.
    " I ain't gonna work on Maggie's Farm no more. ".
    Until she has better reception.

Spent 45 minutes arguing with my payroll company today. Second time in a week. First time I hung up on them. They were giving me the same crap when they clearly had huge mistakes in how my 401K was set up. They refused to acknowledge the mistakes until the point I said they were fired and owed me a huge refund because I was being billed for the type of plan I set up but they had set it up as a different type of plan in their system and would be sued when the Department of Labor and IRS came after me. At that point, all the mistakes in how the plan was set up they had maintained didn't exist were suddenly fixed within 20 minutes.
