Have I ever told the story of me singing at the infamous Stone Pony in Asbury Park? 17 years old and a roadie for the band. Jefferson Airplane, White Rabbit.... and scared sh!tless….

The story or the music?

 

A friend of mine had an up and coming band, and I would occasionally play roadie for them, and hang around during practice. Occasionally, their female singer wouldn't show, and for practice sake, they dragged me into it. They had a gig at the Stone Pony, a big thing for them, even if it was just opener for the main band. (I can't remember who it was at this point). Well into their last set, the lead singer (my friend) started talking, and as soon as he said 'we have a friend with us who is really good with this song....' I was mortified. Scared to death. I literally sat on top of one of the speaker cases, and sang the whole damn thing, staring at the floor.

I guess I did OK, I got applause. But never again, that is for sure!! That is one of those memories that will stick with me until I'm 6 feet under.

 

I was thinking she probably never listened to the words. Same with the other song she requested.



My mom was in attendance and to say she was appalled is an understatement. (Still remember her exact words.. oh my, guess Mary wasn't a religious person, huh?)
