Over the last several years, in our current politics we have seen a large uprising (albeit now declining) idea of "Social Justice", which at it's core is a good thing. There are many specific definitions of social justice, and almost all of them are similar to the one provided by NASW. "Social justice is the view that everyone deserves equal economic, political and social rights and opportunities". Who can disagree with that? I think the vast majority of society, both left right and center can agree with that and believe it is a good thing....by definition. However, my issue with social justice is that in PRACTICE it stands in direct contradiction to actual justice. In actual justice, deciding punishment or reward, and how much of it, is decided simply by your actions, or lack thereof. In social justice, what you do or don't do is weighed against the group that you are in before deciding punishment or reward. That is logically, and morally wrong. An example of this is our most recent womens day off which among many things called for the boycotting of white male owned businesses. This is social justice at its finest (worst). Those who participated in this were boycotting all white male businesses for no other reason than they were born white and male, something out of their control. They chose to boycott based on skin color and sex combination, instead of choosing to boycott specific individuals businesses based on the beliefs that the individual holds. It is this practice that makes social justice in practice, a logically and morally terrible practice. It is something we need to abandon as a society. Justice is just fine as it is, and doesn't need a modifying word.
The problem is that most people who are calling for social justice don't care about how they achieve their goals. They think their goals are more important than freedom of speech and press, etc.
Social Justice is an anachronism, filling the void of 'purpose' left after the real issues were dealt with last century. Given that equality of opportunity (not outcome ... and important distinction) was realised some decades ago, there is nothing for SJWs to do but turn their attentions to gilding the lily. They extract absurd vanities and trivialities from the stack of jobs-outstanding, instead of finding their current and future purpose in bigger issues. Edited to add that there's an obvious reason for this. Effort. It takes very little effort to bleat your virtue sufficiently to keep your friends, but much effort to fight real injustice.
