So absent any strong evidence of vote-rigging (true Communists would have said Hugo got 90% of the vote!), the election outcome shows that quite a few Venezuelans have become dissatisfied with the Chavez regime but not quite enough to take his majority from him. The Republicans are no doubt hoping this isn't a sign of things to come in the U.S. election.

 

I would have thought you may have been a fan, given Karl Marx was a chosen, and so were all the founders of Communism.

You're right. He should have done it the capitalist way: with a tax cut for everyone but with a tax loophole that favors the very rich. Or some sort of cash handout disguised as a government measure (child-rearing dividend?). Or started a war that would get most citizens feeling patriotic and behind the government (don't put the tanks in the street; send them to another country to kill people).

My point is that buying an election is hardly limited to the socialists. A prime example is Mitt Romney, who assures us he can cut taxes by trillions of dollars but revenues generated by increased economic activity will make up for the missing taxes (even though it didn't work for George Dubya). "I will eliminate the deficit by making it bigger" - that should be
Romney's election slogan.
