I understand that slavery was more of an afterthought with the war, but if Spooner is referencing the "voluntary union" converting into a "mandatory union," I'd say that the results were fitting giving the situation.

I don't believe in karma, but it is rather poetic that a cluster of states whose economy was based on slavery would then be "enslaved," so to speak, to a more powerful nation.
