I have a problem with the ACLU or the Anti-American Criminal Liberties Union. Why do they support criminal activity? Drug addicts should be able to collect welfare, criminals should have 3 square meals a day, taxpayers should pay for all illegal immigrants services, etc.

I personally hold them responsible, along with the liberals, for the de-evolution of this country.

No accountability, no responsibility. That's the ACLU way.

The ACLU is a pathetic left wing joke. They are no more than the legal team for left wing nut jobs. The seek to deny first amendment rights of christians. They ignore the 2nd amendment. They ignore the 10th amendment. Cant stand them.

I agree with the concept, an un-aligned non-profit agency to defend the rights of the individual from injustice from big government, big business and big unions.

However it has become the tool of marxists and those with an extreme agenda.

Their causes are political and in that, have become what they are supposed to be against.....

They go a bit overboard, but extremism in the way of liberty is no vice.

I just wish that they would protect all of the Bill of Rights.

I like them because they defend all who have had their civil liberties violated, whether they are on the right or left or anywhere in between. It's funny how so many right wingers demonize them......until they need their pro-bono help!

I appreciated the ACLU when it fought for our Constitution. When it became just another front group for left-wing liberals I lost my appreciation.

    From the horses' mouth.

NEW YORK--In the United States Supreme Court over the past few years, the American Civil Liberties Union has taken the side of a fundamentalist Christian church, a Santerian church, and the International Society for Krishna Consciousness. In celebrated cases, the ACLU has stood up for everyone from Oliver North to the National Socialist Party. In spite of all that, the ACLU has never advocated Christianity, ritual animal sacrifice, trading arms for hostages or genocide. In representing NAMBLA today, our Massachusetts affiliate does not advocate sexual relationships between adults and children.

What the ACLU does advocate is robust freedom of speech for everyone. The lawsuit involved here, were it to succeed, would strike at the heart of freedom of speech. The case is based on a shocking murder. But the lawsuit says the crime is the responsibility not of those who committed the murder, but of someone who posted vile material on the Internet. The principle is as simple as it is central to true freedom of speech: those who do wrong are responsible for what they do; those who speak about it are not.

It is easy to defend freedom of speech when the message is something many people find at least reasonable. But the defense of freedom of speech is most critical when the message is one most people find repulsive. That was true when the Nazis marched in Skokie. It remains true today.

Colonel K: "What the ACLU does advocate is robust freedom of speech for everyone."

Nonsense. Total nonsense. For the ACLU, some words are okay and some words aren't. Some prayers are okay and some prayers aren't. Skokie, Illinois, was in a time when the ACLU didn't care about politics. Now, it's all they care about.

The ACLU supports the law, WHICH APPLIES TO EVERYBODY.

What part do you find objectionable?

American? Just which law do they support? Latvian?

Civil? If the far right idiots believe in civility, perhaps they should practice it.

Liberties? For everybody, not just for the GOP.

Union? Last time I checked, the United States was a union. Wasn't there something which said "in order to create a more perfect union?"

I dont care one way or the other. Some of the cases ACLU defends i dont agree with, but there a few i do.

They've defended homophobic conservitive professors 1st ammendment rights, Rush Limbaugh, the Amish, and public school students religious freedom.

I like the ideal of the ACLU supposedly stands for, but they seem very one sided, and, sometimes, very wrong.

On November 5, 54 percent of California voters voted yes on Proposition 209 - a ballot initiative banning all affirmative action in government employment and public education - affirming the governor's earlier efforts to end racial preferences in the state's public universities. The American Civil Liberties Union challenged 209, but the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the law in April, 1997. The U.S. Supreme Court later declined to hear the ACLU's appeal.

I take very little issue with them. I know some on the right like to cherry pick cases and ignore others to make some sort of point (albiet a very poor point based on the actual facts). For the most part they tend to defend free speech and separation of church of state, both of which I tend to support. Like any good Libertarian I'm all for defending rights even if some don't feel they need to be defended.

The orginisation gets a bad rap in my oppinion. The media likes to focus on certain things and ignore others. I say we are better for having them then not.

Everything you need to know about the ACLU. However they arent nearly as bad as their Communist front counterpart the National Lawyers Guild. Though members of one are often members of the other.
