The Attack on Self-Defense A good article on the insanity of the attack on self defense with some good examples of the insanity. The rhetoric has not changed from 'you can't defend yourself' to 'we will have OK Corral shootouts in the streets'. Both prove to be demonstrably false. I like the conclusion, bolding mine.
I have heard the same tired arguments for years from the anti-gun folks. Blood in the streets, guns taken away from the victim, wild west, can't control your temper, etc. As more states come on line with concealed carry and constitutional carry and as more and more web sites dedicate themselves to collecting stories of self defense it is patently obvious that the dire predictions of the anti-gun folks just aren't true. Beyond that, law enforcement officials are recognizing their limits and recommending citizens arm themselves. These are the very people who understand the concept of the need for armed self defense. I recently ran into a state trooper and in casual conversation I asked what he thought of the recently passed constitutional carry, he replied that he loved it and thought it was perfectly fine for law abiding citizens to carry guns. He stated his wife had been carrying for years. Time is on side in this discussion, more stats will be gathered, more places will allow people to defend themselves and ultimately more of the tire arguments of the anti-gunners will be dismissed as emotional fears.
In many Liberal States, the law allows people to carry around a gun and theoretically allows them to use it in emergency situations, but State officials are very reluctant to let this happen in actuality. Carry permits are automatically revoked if the holder has been involved in even the slightest incident, even if it was justified. In other words, basically people may only have the right to use self defense once. The revocable permit system allows State officials to enforce this unwritten policy. So self defense is not really viewed as an inalienable right in some places.
From time to time, I come upon a crime scene, "out in the sticks". Several times now, I've been out there with the responding law enforcement guys. When they learn that I'm armed, they invariably express their gratitude, because now they know they have some kind of back-up. I talk to cops from all over the country, in the course of driving a cab in Las Vegas. When the subject comes up, they almost always tell me that they are glad to have armed Citizens, because the majority of us are fully aware of the implied social contract. The ones who are not comfortable with armed Citizens are ALWAYS from some ******* mecca, like Philly or Chicago, where the armed bad guys outnumber the armed good guys. Who would have imagined?
