Are you telling me that Alexander wasn't GR8, or Churchill, are you telling me that they weren't the best military commanders of their age?
American mariner is admiring the skull of a Japanese. A girl from Arizona writes a letter to her boyfriend with gratitude for sending an exellent souvenir - Japanese soldier's skull. A head of a Japanese cut off and hung by Americans.A future souvenir. It's not a barbarism, it is only democratically severed human heads, and Americans are not fascists at all. Empire of Kindness, you know.
It would be an interesting thread to contribute to again and again. To have more of an impact, dig in to the modern wars and find out what gets scrubbed from the news broadcasts. Like in Vietnam, a good heart and dedication like this tends to bring the truth home...even if for a little while.
Yes, war can be very horrific. But sometimes war is better than the alternative. And sometimes trying to avoid war at all costs just prolongs the inevitable and, by pushing it off into the future, just makes it worse. Deciding when to seek peace and when to wage war can be a difficult decission. But if a country does go to war, I think it is very important that the common people have a say in the matter.
Interesting, and I believe it to be true. Despite the nature of the war, or the methods used during the war- whether excusable or inexcusable they have made America what it is today and given you the standard of living you have enjoyed up till now. It's not the greatest, but it's better than some. If we slip from number one, we are no longer priority lion, and that's when you'll really start to complain.
Churchill was an idiot. He got about 200,000 soldiers killed in his failed attempt against the Germans in Turkey. It cost him his commission. The man was a retard.
Have you never heard of John Churchill or something? Then again you are a tea partier. The man wasn't a retard as he prove over the next 40 years, which started with him writing a very good book about his ancestor John Churchill.
The Churchill being referred to is the one in WWII I'd imagine since it was a response to a WWII picture. Not sure why they would be referring to John Churchill who was certainly better in every regard than Winston was.
I was responding to the OP's quote, and I think it is rather stupid. "THERE ARE NO GREAT MEN. THERE ARE ONLY GREAT CHALLENGES THAT ORDINARY MEN ARE FORCED BY CIRCUMSTANCES TO MEET" - ADM WILLIAM F HALSEY.
There may be no great men but there are plenty that are stupid and make stupid decisions that cost many other men their lives. Churchill was one of them. Let us not forget his wonderful policy of daylight bombing raids against Germany. Or demanding that Patton's third army hold their advance in order to let Montgomery take the lead thereby causing more casualties all so Churchill could look good. He was pathetic.
Well, whether certain controversial methods should be used during war is another matter for debate. All sorts of "dirty tactics" often get used during full out war. They are frequently not justifiable. It can be very tempting during war to use a strategy that will kill hundreds of innocent lives when it will save the lives of a few of your own soldiers.
this was his war. and he told me the glory and honor quickly wore off when the bullets are aimed at you. these guys did this day in and day out. after so long it was down to the burtal business of just killing the enemy so they could go home. so i posted this from his point of view. our wars are over
Well maybe if the US had been in the war from the start Churchill wouldn't have things like that. Daylight bombing worked in the end, with a fight escort for the bombers. I agree Montgomery was (*)(*)(*)(*), Patton was better. But it was because of W. Chruchill that their was a war for the Americans to fight in. I hate FDR aswell.
Welcome to war, mainstream society. So many of you live in insulated societies with no understanding of the realities of war and human brutality. It's not Call of Duty or Saving Private Ryan.
There is a psychological cost of learning to kill in war. There is an innate resistance to killing, and basic military training combined with advanced training for those in the combat arms has by and large been successful at stifling this resistance.
