NEW YORK (WABC) -- Details are emerging about the weapon used to carry out the deadly ambush on police officers in Dallas, and while not confirmed, it is believed that the sniper used what is increasingly the weapon of choice in mass shootings.

"We will find that it was a military-style assault weapon with a large capacity magazine on it," Citizens Crime Commission president Richard Aborn said. "And this happens over and over and over again."

Last month, a military-style rifle was used by the gunman who killed 49 people at an Orlando nightclub. And last December, a husband and wife terrorist team killed 14 using a similar semi-automatic rifle. Adam Lanza used a military-type rifle in 2012 to kill 26 students and teachers at a school in Newtown Connecticut, and a similar AR-15-type military rifle was used to kill 12 people earlier that year in a Colorado movie theater.

"The AR-15 Assault weapon is the preferred weapon of these mass killers," former NYPD sergeant and FBI special agent Manuel Gomez said.

Gomez says that until Congress reinstates the ban on these military-style weapons, they will continue to be used in mass shootings because of their killing efficiency.

"You can shoot 50, 60, up to 100 rounds in one minute," he said. "And each round designed to enter the body and tear that piece that it entered apart."

A report by New York's Citizen Crime Commission concluded that after Congress lifted the ban on these military-style rifles in 2004, the number of people killed by semi-automatic, high-capacity guns tripled. Aborn said the Dallas police killings adds to their death toll.

July 8, 2016 • The sniper who killed five Dallas cops and wounded seven more was the sole shooter in a devastating ambush that made Thursday the deadliest day for a police force since 9/11, officials said.

Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings confirmed the identity of the shooter as Micah X. Johnson, 25, in a Friday evening press conference and said law enforcement officers had determined, after finding a trove of weapons and written combat manifestos in his home, that the shooter acted alone and that there were no more potential suspects on the loose. “This was mobile shooter that had written manifestos on how to shoot and move, shoot and move, and he did that,” Rawlings said. “He did his damage, but we did damage to him as well.” “We believe now that the city is safe,” the mayor said. “We can move on to healing.” The White House announced late Friday that President Obama will cut short a European trip to visit Dallas early next week.

Johnson, who served six years in the Army Reserve, died early Friday when police deployed a robot to blow up an explosive device in the parking garage where officers had cornered him and engaged in hours of negotiations that ultimately failed. Police earlier described the attack as “well-planned” and Friday evening revealed that law enforcement found rifles and tactical gear in a search of a home the sniper apparently shared with his mother in Mesquite, Texas, 20 miles outside of Dallas. “During the search of the suspect’s home, detectives found bomb-making materials, ballistic vests, rifles, ammunition and a personal journal of combat tactics,” police said in a statement. “Detectives are in the process of analyzing the information contained in the journal.”

Earlier in the day, Dallas Police Chief David Brown described a chilling exchange between Johnson and officers attempting to negotiate his surrender. “The suspect said he was upset at white people. The suspect stated he wanted to kill white people, especially white officers,” Brown said. “The suspect said he was upset about Black Lives Matter. He said he was upset about the recent police shootings.”

Officials said two civilians were also injured in the attack. “We are heartbroken,” Brown said during a news conference Friday. “There are no words to describe the atrocity that occurred to our city.” While police had said Thursday they believed “two snipers” opened fire on officers “from elevated positions,” authorities said Friday that they determined only one person shot at police. “At this time, there appears to have been one gunman with no known links to or inspiration from any international terrorist organization,” Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson said Friday afternoon.

The eruption of violence at around 9 p.m. occurred during a calm protest over recent police shootings in Minnesota and Louisiana, with similar demonstrations occurring in cities across the country. As a barrage of gunfire ripped through the air, demonstrators and police officers alike scrambled. The violence did not end in Dallas. Officers were also shot Friday in Georgia, Tennessee and Missouri. In Georgia, police said a man called 9-1-1 and then shot at the responding officer, wounding him, the Associated Press reported. And a police officer was in critical condition in St. Louis after being shot during a traffic stop Friday morning, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported. Police said Friday that Micah Xavier Johnson, a black 25-year-old believed to be from the Dallas area, was the attacker. Dallas Mayor S. Mike Rawlings told the Associated Press Johnson used an AR-15 assault weapon in the ambush.

Johnson, who had no criminal history, deployed to Afghanistan with the U.S. Army from November 2013 through July 2014 and was in the Army Reserve from 2009 until last year. Army records show that Johnson, whose home was listed as Mesquite, Tex., had served with an engineering brigade before he was sent to Afghanistan. He did not have a combat job and was listed as a carpentry and masonry specialist. The Dallas Police Department said Friday that during a search of Johnson’s home, they found “bomb making materials, ballistic vests, rifles, ammunition, and a personal journal of combat tactics.” Authorities said they were still investigating the journal’s contents.

July 09, 2016 - President Barack Obama will cut short a trip to Europe and travel next week to Dallas, Texas, where a deadly ambush left five policemen dead, the White House said Friday. Obama, who is in Poland for a NATO summit, will return to Washington on Sunday night, a day earlier than planned and eliminating a stop in Seville, Spain, the White House said in a statement.

Obama called the shootings a "vicious, calculated and despicable attack" on officers who were performing their jobs. He ordered American flags be lowered to half-staff at the White House and on all public buildings and grounds for four days in honor of the dead and wounded. U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch said the Department of Justice will provide any assistance needed in the Dallas investigation. "Do not let this week precipitate a new normal in this country," she told reporters during a news conference Friday. U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson on Friday also said the shooter had no known links to international terrorist organizations. He added, "Violence is never the answer. Violence directed at our police officers is never the answer."

Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings confirmed that the killing of five police officers in the Texas city on Thursday was carried out by a lone gunman, identified as Micah Johnson. Rawlings said Friday at a news conference, "This was a mobile shooter who had written manifestos on how to shoot and move, and he did that." He added that now that the shooter is dead, "We believe now that the city is safe ... and we can move on to healing." Texas Governor Greg Abbott said while the shooter is dead, law enforcement officers must now investigate and ensure that any co-conspirators or other suspects who may have helped him. He added, "We need to focus on the imperative of unity: that we unite all citizens of Dallas, all citizens of Texas."

During a search of Johnson's home on Friday, Dallas police detectives found bomb-making materials, ballistic vests, rifles, ammunition, and a personal journal of combat tactics, the police department said in a statement. The deadly ambush that killed five police officers Thursday night was a "well-planned" attack. The White House said the shooting is unrelated to domestic or international terrorism.

'Ambush'

The attack, which city officials labeled an "ambush," happened toward the end of a demonstration against the killing of two black men by white police officers in Minnesota and Louisiana earlier this week. The gunman told officers he was "upset" about recent police shootings, Dallas Police Chief David Brown said. The U.S. military has confirmed the gunman was a former Army Reservist who served in Afghanistan. Three other people, who have not been identified, were also detained in connection with the attack. Cornered by police after the ambush, Johnson told a negotiator he wanted "to kill white people, especially white (police) officers," and said he was acting alone and was unaffiliated with any groups, Brown said during a news conference Friday.

One was a private contractor who helped train the Iraqi police force, while the other was a Navy veteran who served three tours in the country.

In total, 12 police officers were shot in the coordinated attack in downtown Dallas, officials said Friday. The officers were killed by a single black man who said he wanted to kill white people specifically white police officers as retaliation for two black men who died at the hands of police in the states of Minnesota and Louisiana. The suspected shooter in the incident was identified as Micah Johnson, a U.S. Army veteran who served in Afghanistan.

Brent Thompson had been an officer with the Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) system for the past seven years and was the first of the five officers killed Thursday night. Prior to joining the DART police force, the 43-year-old Thompson worked for DynCorp International, where he spent more than four years in Iraq working alongside American soldiers to help train and mentor the Iraqi police force. He had just married a fellow DART officer two weeks ago, DART Chief James Spiller said. Thompson was also a father and grandfather from a previous marriage.

Patrick Zamarripa, 32, also served in Iraq. He completed three tours with the Navy where he was deployed in Bahrain, according to military records. Upon returning from Iraq, he served in the military reserves alongside his service with the Dallas police. He leaves behind his wife, Kristy Villasenor, his two-year-old daughter and a step-son.

Police officers killed in Dallas

Lorne Aherns was a Senior Corporal with the DPD before he died in the shooting. He served on the force in Dallas for 14 years. The 48-year-old Aherns, was originally from California. He was married to a fellow Dallas police officer and was a father of two children, aged 10 and eight.

Michael Krol, 40, had always wanted to be a police officer, his uncle, Jim Ehlke, said. Prior to joining the Dallas police, Krol worked at a correctional facility in Michigan, but, Ehlke said, Krol still wanted to do more. "He got into law enforcement and worked really hard to be a police officer, Ehlke said. He spent some time at the correctional facility. It wasn't quite what he was looking for, so he worked pretty hard to find a job and got one in Dallas.

Pain shared by all law enforcement officers

"We have the largest number of officers killed in the line of duty of (than) any other state. He said more than 1,960 law enforcers have been killed in shootings, automobile accidents and other ways while performing their jobs over the history of the state. He says violence against officers of the law has been a problem since the frontier days, but that lax gun laws today sometimes contribute to their sense of vulnerability.

Police object to open carry law for guns in Texas

During the shooting Thursday, Dallas police briefly detained one man who was seen carrying a rifle on the scene. He was released after it was determined he had not been involved in the shooting. The right of citizens to own guns is protected by the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and the open carrying of guns is legal in Texas. Last year the state legislature extended that right to people who have a concealed handgun permit so that a pistol can be worn publicly in a holster.

The Combined Law Enforcement Associations of Texas opposed that law based on the problems it would create for police, but Wilkison says lawmakers passed it anyway. I am SICK of people literally erasing the existence of people who are shot, but technically live to trivialize them to nothing, even though their lives and bodies and/or brain may be so destroyed they'd rather be dead.

NOR was thisa black guy shooting white cops. This was a black guy shooting white people including non-police.

Over 100 people were SHOT IN ORLANDO, not just so many "killed."

I do get your point but I think the practical reason they aren't front and center in the media is that they choose not to be. Their affirmative choice.

It skews the optics but not the reality. We (friends, family, community, government) care for our own and do a damn good job. Just because it's not seen doesn't mean care and concern is absent.

Also one can be proactive in helping, travel to Texas and offer support I'm sure it will be accepted. Can't travel their, a little searching and due diligence you'll find the path that can get your donation directly to someone in need.

I really do not get targeting someone for their race or ethnicity. Neither of these things determine who a person is. If someone is upset because they feel blacks are being targeted by police how does killing white people do any good?

People like Martin Luther King Jr had the right idea: Try to win hearts and minds in a peaceful way by making the case for what is right. King was a great man. This shooter will be forgotten in a few weeks.
