I have Medicare which started at 65. I pay for it out of my Social Security every month. I supplement my Medicare with Humana Care Advantage. I only pay if I use it. My max deductible is $3400 a year. Every month I drop a couple hundred into a fund to cover medical, some towards burial, and a emergency expense fund.

~ Medicare is an entitlement for the older population only - not socialist. We have a choice. However the "progressive" agenda is the opposite. They are determined to destroy all health care options until only big government is available . That would be socialist medicine - like the Medicaid system for everyone.

I guess that is because there will be so much money left over from Mommy and Daddy no longer having to pay college tuition and forgiveness of debt their sorry asses ran up. Now I see some states are considering making those who are working at home pay taxes. Defund all the police should save them a ton. I suffer from an auto-immune problem that keeps me in less than great health. I'm also a cancer survivor. If Trump and friends manage to get the conservative-packed SCOTUS to destroy the ACA, I'd be totally screwed if I weren't already on Medicare. I probably pay more than you for my supplement, but I have no deductibles, no co-payments, and can choose any doctors I want whenever I want.

I'm way away from being healthy. I too am on Medicare. I chose Humana supplement over Anthem BC/BS because I can use it outside of the state I live in. BC/BS had a regular rate which does give some comfort if you know what your out of pocket every month is going to be. I had BC/BS through my employer up until this year when I retired. At 79 my cancer had spread and at the moment is in a holding pattern. J&J has waived a very expensive medication for me at present. (Thank God). My only point to you would be is that people need to realize that health is not a guaranteed thing and they seriously need to think about how they can protect themselves financially for the future.

I have grandkids who think the ACA is the answer too all their concerns about health care. They want the government to pay for it because they have been brainwashed into believing that it is a Constitutional right and they are entitled to it. The way I see it now, if everybody is on ACA, the standard of our care will deteriorate as hospitals and waiting times for appointments with physicians are over taxed now. This year my appointments run between 3 and 12 months. The earliest I can get in to see a dentist is on Christmas Eve this year. So what do you think is going to happen when 11 - 30 million more people are put in the system and that is not counting the illegals Biden & Co wish to add.

As for an overtaxed system, take heart: many tens of thousands of young men and women are choosing that career path.

As for wait times: that could be a product of where one chooses to live. I seem to get appointments within a week or two of calling, sooner if it's my primary doc who knows my issues, or the surgeon I'm seeing again this week to discuss next steps on two problems I'm currently desling with.

As for who should pay: I'm of two minds there. I like the idea of Medicare as a public option for those who want it, and not mandatory for those who don't. I like the fact that it is not free, since we start paying for it as soon as we get our first job and pay a monthly fee out of Social Security when we retire, and that those who have the means and so choose can purchase supplements from private insurers. What I don't like is health insurance companies making life or death decisions for us based on nothing more than where we appear on some spreadsheet designed by lawyers. Being poor should not be a death sentence, nor should any illness in a family force them to sell everything to pay the medical bills, up to and including their homes.

What has upset me the most is one of Biden's or Harris's transition team who believes over 70 should be denied certain treatment for long term terminal illness. I was healthy as a ox until I hit 75 and I admit there are good days and bad days. I worked 4 more years while under treatment and if it wasn't for Covid I would be getting out more. My ex boss has already told me that if I can get my strength up he would hire me back part time or full time. I guess what rubbed me wrong was is this guy is 60 and his attitude is "He doesn't understand why people would want to live pass 70".

As someone creeping up on 70, and I don't think I'm alone here, I think the good doctor is quite wrong about the contributions that many senior citizens still make.

 

Beyond a shadow of a doubt. Just think of the number of senior citizens that watch their grandchildren grow up and provide knowledge and guidance. My ex boss just yesterday told me that he has had do my job since I left because he has had to remove two other replacements who have not been capable of the task. One of them in their 20's and the other in his 40's. Like the old song goes " I ain't too old to cut the mustard, I'm just too old to spread it around".
