How did our opposition to the Soviet Union prolong its existence?

Claim; Trump actually lowered the debt-to-GDP ratio, MAGA!

    …..."by a fraction of a point", thus, definitely NOT a formidable accomplishment considering the fact, in the 90's, the combination of two important factors SIGNIFICANTLY lowered the Debt to GDP by 10%;

    a. A high growth cycle, and
    b. Spending restraints

Whereas; a combination of a high growth cycle and out-of-control spending equates to; "a fraction of a point"

Trumpeteers; You can't fool me with your partisan bull.

Intetresting theory but communism was spreading and making inroads into our hemisphere. No reason to believe it would fall on it's own before taking over much of the third world. Then Soviets would have had access to all those resources to prop itself up for generations to come. Germany fascism and genocide would have eventually fallen on it's own but we still needed to step in and stop it and the same was true with the Soviet Union. Fortunately Reagan was a visionary enough to stop it early in it's conception and before another world war was necessary to do so.

No. Communism in the Soviet Union was already collapsing from internal pressures after their War in Afghanistan. You can pretend that the 170% increase in the debt was a good thing, but in the long run it will be seen as a catalyst for the collapse of the US economy. It was the start of Presidents using gross overspending to give the illusion of of prosperity. You’re just so caught up in pathetic partisan cheerleading that you pretend bad is good. Sad.

Think about what you just said and how I previously informed you Reagan spending helped destroy the Soviet Union. You deny that but Inadvertently you just agreed with me. Maybe you didn't know the Soviet failure in Afghanistan was due to the fact that the Reagan administration was feeding billions of dollars in arms to Afghanistan’s Islamic resistance?

Communism had plenty of resources to prop itself up anyway. It wasted them in unworkable schemes and processes where ideology was substituted for research, work and practicality at every turn while corruption was endemic and rampant. And the major basis of all this ideology and corruption was the propaganda that we in the West were out to get them, which we were all too anxious to confirm at every opportunity. They weren't making inroads into "our " hemisphere. Rather we were sending in troops to prop up dictators killing their own people for promoting democracy. Ho Chi Minh had once said that one of the men he admired most was Abraham Lincoln, we supported a guy who said his model was Adolf Hitler

The collapse of the Soviet Union was due mainly to the fact that Carter embargoed the grain which we had been selling them at fire sale prices after they invaded Afghanistan. That policy nearly destroyed our own mid-size family farms but it just about bankrupted the Soviets. (Russia's major problem throughout it's history has been that it cannot feed itself, that's why it's so big, they keep chasing more and more land into areas of worse and worse climate and soils.) The Soviet problems in Afghanistan were much more a manifesting of their failures at home than our arming the Afghan resistance.

Well we agree on one thing Communism eventually falls of it's own weight. We disagree on how much damage they could have done and how long they would have lasted without Reagan opposition. We supported anyone in any country that fought Soviet expansion and yeah sometimes those were not good people. Such is war. Stalin was the enemy of our enrmy and for a while our friend .

Revisionist history is fun but it's historical fact that Afghanistan was the Soviets Waterloo and ended their empire.

The Cold War wasn't war, it was a propaganda tool used by both sides to prop up their own regimes. We did it as much as the Soviets. The Soviets were worse because their underlying ideology was worse, but we were still pretty bad and I think we should freely admit that rather than acting as if a whole nation were nothing but unprincipled villains while we were just so tough that not even the thorns on the roses growing from our butts ever bothered us.

The Soviets at first regarded Afghanistan as a Proving Ground for the burgeoning arms industry they still have even today. It didn't stay that way for long, just like Vietnam didn't for us, and, yes, their reverses there didn't help their situation even a little but they collapsed because of close on to a century of chronic economic mismanagement and malfeasance, not a war they had largely withdrawn from after just a few more years.

The cold war was real. The Soviets were intent on world domination if not subjugation and Reagan is who stopped them them from doing so.

If Soviets had been victorious in Afghanistan and went unopposed in our hemisphere they would likely still be the Soviets and the world today would look far different.

Gorbachev was and is a far different man than Putin, and many say better. I think Putin a more dangerous adversary but the system he runs is far less problematic to us, so it all works out in the end.

I don't say we shouldn't have opposed communism but we shouldn't have sacrificed our basic principles to do so and supported dictators, just like we are doing now

Here's your problem - Reagan's total bill for military aid to Afghanistan was $3 billion - less than 1% of the budget. So for you to claim that Reagan's 170% increase in spending really had anything to do with the collapse of the Soviet Union is misleading at best.

Gorby and Putin were-are both expansionist and posed-pose the same threat. During the cold war we often had two choices neither of which were good and often we had to choose anybody who would fight Soviet take over of their country and often as not that person was a local thug bent on domination and brutal control of their immediate domain and population. Sometimes you have no other choice than to choose the lesser of two evils.

Reagan fought Soviet expansion around the world not to mention upgrading our nuclear and entire military capabilities at the same time which was extremely expensive. He was hitting the Soviets with everything we had and as they struggled to keep up with our military upgrades and struggled to keep up their expansionist policies that Reagan mounted opposition to the Soviets withered like a boxer on the ropes getting pummeled from all sides.
