    Im going to assume you’ve either actually watched the movies, watched the cartoons or read the comics because that’s technically true, but not in any way the point I was trying to make.

    It also wouldn’t happen, so no need to worry about riots

    Your meaning is that you apparently think that the contentions in your first 3 sentences are ludicrous, though you have exaggerated those claims. Nowhere did I see the article state anything so silly, as that everyone who isn't racist, will like this movie. However, are you unaware that racists exist? And do you think they are above, getting bent out of shape by something as trivial as this? (They're not). So the movie site picked up on unusual patterns in the reviews. They have learned to spot when small minded people pan a movie for racial reasons, even when those "reviewers" haven't seen the film-- even if you seem to not believe, that such a thing could happen.

    Racist attitudes do exist outside of the U.S., Kal. See, you really can learn something new, every day. And blacks probably get the worst of it, worldwide. The article cites White Supremacist push-back, against the film, which it ties to the Right-wing war on "wokeness." Do you not believe either of these things exist, either?

    <Snip>

    Audiences are possessive of cultural properties like Disney classics because they serve, in many ways, to reinforce the US national narrative: that in white worlds, all heroes are white. (And when the heroes aren’t white, they exist in their own worlds, where the extent of their influence is limited to characters who look like them.)

    More than just fodder for nostalgia, these classic stories are part of US myth-building about itself. Making a Black woman the central figure in that myth disrupts the well-established hierarchies that have been embedded in that national narrative.

    That the fallout reached China and South Korea shows not only the global reach of anti-Blackness, but just how much the US’s own racial discourse permeates all of its cultural products, no matter where they are in the world. Disney films are uniquely American, yet Chinese audiences were unhappy because “the image of the mermaid princess in Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tales has long been rooted in their hearts and it takes a leap of imagination to accept the new cast.”

    ...

    And for white American parents who are so committed to avoiding the work of anti-racism that they’ve simply opted to erase all references to Blackness from their lives altogether,* having a young Black woman at the helm of a story about identity and self-discovery is simply unacceptable.
    ..

    The reaction to the film is crucial to understanding both why it’s gotten so much hate and why it’s so important that it was made. Much of the
    white supremacist pushback against the film is tied to the rightwing war against wokeness.

    Ironically, though, the fact that
    some people can only imagine a Black girl playing Ariel as the end result of some nefarious plot to force children to see more Black people on screen is precisely why I’m glad that this Ariel is Black. White society is clinging on to these cultural staples for dear life because they’re an easy way to reinforce their ideals around what society should look like, and colorblind casting of these iconic characters is a necessary subversion of that.
    <End Snip>

    Your attitude, that the idea that there could be racists, hating on the film, is all a conspiracy to prevent poor reviews to movies with black leading characters, seems very similar, to that of those mentioned on the last paragraph of the above snip.

    Again, your unstated but implied point is that you found something wrong with the critique that *the movie takes place in a time and place when there was horrendously racist slavery practices, which the film ignores, much the way that many want to pretend that there not only is no longer any racism, but to even avoid talking about its existence in the past, as much as possible. I thought the criticism was well made. What argument do you have, against it?

    <Snip>

    Mermaid, Caribbean Slavery, and Telling the Truth to Children,” Ryder points out that the movie appears to take place in the Caribbean in the 18th century during a time of African chattel slavery — yet the islanders depicted in the film seem to live in a world free of this inhumanity.

    “In this setting, I do not think we do our children any favors by pretending that slavery didn’t exist,” he wrote. “For me Disney’s preference to try and wish the inconvenient truth away says more about the adult creatives than it does about children’s ability to work through it.”

    Though he acknowledged that the movie is a fantasy and doesn’t necessarily need to be historically accurate, he said that Disney shouldn’t be “encouraging historical amnesia."
    <End Snip>

    That seems reasonable, to me.

    I watched it on HBO Max it was good not great. Fine to watch on tv, but I'd been unhappy if I had paid $30 to see it with my son in the theater

    It's actually true, and actually easy to write in a white man a legit path to becoming a panther. But then you know this. And your point was garbage and easy to write around. But that's not your point. Your point is that you don't want to see a black character get played by a white actor for all the reasons you pretend don't matter.

    ;)

    Those people are violent enough anyways. They don't need a white black panther to trigger them.

    Why do people who have been on this forum forever ask me to prove a topic that was covered here thoroughly at the time?

    Lets not talk about triggered when you have that ingrown pubic hair of a governor as your avatar that openly lets doctors discriminate in his state.

    Besides no one’s getting violent over Black Panther, they’re better at telling the difference between fictional characters and real ones.

    Oh I didn't realize that "Ariel" was already calling people racist in February. How's that working out for ya Halle? Isn't it awesome how divided we are since we started hyper focusing in on race? Way to go progressives!

    This man was cast to play an Irish ginger in the book named "Red". Nobody cared!

    You could but that’s not at all how things would work in the comics, and there’s absolutely no reason for them to do that anyway. But then if you really wanna see a white Black Panther so badly then write your own trashy fan fiction and send it to Stormfront, I’m sure those inbreds there would love it.

    Well nobody has been stupid enough to race swap a black character yet. But watch what happens if we ever do that!

    I find it delicious as to how triggered you get at the prospect of a white black panther but then ask us to accept a black little mermaid.

    delicious!

    They didn't.

    Because Morgan Freeman is a ****ing great actor. Shawshank wasn't a remake of a blockbuster hit where the role was previously cast by a white guy. Freeman also killed at the part, and the producers of Shawshank didn't grandstand about how representation matters!

    The more you hyper focus on race and keep count...the more this **** matters and you divide us.

    Here's hoping the producers of James Bond learn from this fiasco.

    This isn’t what you think it is because I didn’t make the thread and I’m not the one complaining about a black mermaid and trying to jump through hoops to justify a white panther.

    What exactly do you think is going to happen? Studios whitewash Egyptians and everything’s still standing.
