It does have national significance because people celebrate it around the country. The date means something to the people who attend the festivals. Widely reported doesn't mean that everyone was informed. You can't tell people what it makes sense for them to celebrate. The holiday is not called Thirteenth Amendment Day. It's called Juneteenth in honor of the historic event.
Really??? Beer is certainly a major part of St. Patricks Day, but BBQ?? I've never heard that one... You're going to have to defend that one, but now we know where you got your forum name...
And where did blues come from? Country blues and hollars. Combine african influence and Celtic influence and you get the basis of American music. And whites were involved in jazz early in that evolution. Jazz came from a variety of music styles including ragtime, swing, blues putting improvisation to more a leading role all down along the riverfront in New Orleans and spread from there. It's all American music not one race's music.
I always have corned beef and cabbage on saint patty day and I'm half Irish the 4th of July is usually the holiday you BBQ
The date has no national historical significance it was just one town in Texas where the Union forces arrived that day, not a very historical event.
Also, you're making the same mistake than doof was making earlier. Celebrating the origin of a music style doesn't diminish those who pkayed it after.
Who? Which glorious leader? Kim Um Ding Dong of NK? Or are you making fun of Putin's friend in the White House for claiming that he made Juneteenth famous?
That was certainly part of it but slaves weren't the only ones who used music to complain about their lives and blues can be happy too. Nope just being historically accurate and crediting all who contributed. No just being historically accurate and no point trying to have a civil discussion with you.
The fact that people in different parts of the country have commemorated it for 150 years makes it a historic event. The fact that it took the Union Army to secure the freedom of the Texas group with a show of force and that some of them didn't know that they had been freed is definitely a historic event.
Well, I'm not but I also like BBQ.... just never considered that on SPD.... We are a fish and chips family that day... house smells like it the next day, but it's worth it...
According to a poll 48% of Americans(and I'm one of them) didn't know crap about Juneteenth until this came up. In fact, I don't think I'd seen it printed on any physical print calendar...EVER in my life.
Oh BFD......The Declaration of Indepence was not officially signed until Aug 2, 1776. Obviously declared on the day we shoot off fireworks and cook on our grills while drinking beer and waiting for our wives to ask if the burgers are done yet and laugh when our Vegetarian daughters ask if their PITA burgers aka veggie burgers were touched by the real meat burgers. I used to place the PITA burgers on top of the real hamburgers and laugh after I told her no.
I've already said I'm one of them as well... there's no shame in that, and it is an unintended consequence of the original rally date... As Trump ridiculous claims go, this isn't even in the top 50 worst ones, just a highly insensitive one.. It's kind of like being the guy who bragged about inventing Zyklon B for it's original uses as a pesticide and delousing tool...
Sure, but not a lot, just a half bottle of whatever low carb stuff we have on hand. To me, the key to good fish and chips (after the fish of course) is the salting and the malt vinegar. I've ordered it from street vendors in Ireland (sold wrapped in newspaper), so that's the flavor profile we go for....
