Once upon a time, a group of people who were becoming outnumbered became frightened of others. They wanted dikes built to keep the flood of "Others" out. But the dikes didn't work and the flood continued. A man wth big hands said, "I will stick my thumb in the dike and protect you all from those others of whom you are so afraid." And so the people listened to their fear and put their faith in the man with the big thumbs. Unfortunately, his mouth was even bigger than his thumbs and he made many promises, none of them supported by thought. And so, while his thumbs were big, and his promises many, and the people so wanted to believe trusted him, he had no evidence any of his promises would work even though they all contained words like, "great again." Now the flood of others was never really the danger. The danger was that the frightened ones had given up educating themselves and learning how to improve themselves. Had they learned, they could have found new jobs. They were just so frozen by their fear, and, truth be known, laziness, that they would rather listen to the promises of big hands than do anything to better themselves. They could have worked with the others and built a country that didn't need dikes, but the man with big thumbs with his bad promises kept them from facing the problems so, at the least, any help for them was put off for a long time.
