I thought I'd create a place for discussing the business side of movies, as well as posting the charts each week. Please note that this thread only relates to the box office intake in North America. Discussion of foreign numbers is allowed, but I'm only posting domestic numbers here. A film's box office total is in parentheses. http://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/?yr=2013&wknd=24&p=.htm June 14-16, 2013 1. Man of Steel - $116,619,362 ($128,681,486) 2. This is the End - $20,719,162 ($33,027,297) 3. Now You See Me - $11,016,473 ($80,705,916) 4. Fast & Furious 6 - $9,583,330 ($219,723,955) 5. The Purge - $8,317,995 ($51,962,845) 6. I'm always interested in how certain movies do at the box office so this thread is a welcome one in my book! EDIT: By the way you post I sometimes look at your avatar and wish you were a girl. That's a compliment, btw!
I've noticed that the animated films (Disney/Pixar, etc) almost always do well at the box office - I wonder why that is.
June 21-23, 2013 1. Monsters University - $82,429,469 ($82,429,469) 2. World War Z - $66,411,834 ($66,411,834) 3. Man of Steel - $41,287,206 ($210,078,153) 4. This is the End - $13,290,642 ($58,082,166) 5. Now You See Me - $7,876,002 ($94,456,978 ) 6. Fast & Furious 6 - $4,930,685 ($228,618,155) 7. The Purge - $3,587,630 ($59,604,075) 8. June 28-30, 2013 1. Monsters University - $45,607,745 ($170,433,193) 2. The Heat - $39,115,043 ($39,115,043) 3. World War Z - $29,774,625 ($123,696,919) 4. White House Down - $24,852,258 ($24,852,258 ) 5. Man of Steel - $20,737,490 ($248,577,596) 6. This is the End - $8,700,827 ($74,681,836) 7. Now You See Me - $5,612,267 ($104,792,858 ) 8. Fast & Furious 6 - $2,448,995 ($233,351,765) 9. Star Trek: Into Darkness - $2,100,458 ($220,561,325) 10. The Internship - $1,431,710 ($41,711,796)
Pixar has quite the box office record Toy Story (1995) - $191,796,233 A Bug's Life (1998 ) - $162,798,565 Toy Story 2 (1999) - $245,852,179 Monsters, Inc (2001) - $255,873,250 Finding Nemo (2003) - $339,714,978 The Incredibles (2004) - $261,441,092 Cars (2006) - $244,082,982 Ratatouille (2007) - $206,445,654 Wall-E (2008 ) - $223,808,164 Up (2009) - $293,004,164 Toy Story 3 (2010) - $415,004,880 Cars 2 (2011) - $191,452,396 Brave (2012) - $237,283,207 Monsters University (2013) - $170,433,193 (So far) Ticket price inflation should be taken into account, but even then, the fact that almost all of their films gross $200+ million is proof that they have wide appeal to children and adults alike. Cars 2 kind of broke their box office streak. It had 16 years of inflation and 3D ticket prices on it's side, and it only was able to match the first Toy Story in domestic gross.
