Ridiculous. Car payments, college education, home ownership etc are all 'luxuries'. No one NEEDS those things. A living wage is one that keeps you alive (fed and sheltered), nothing more.

But more importantly - you're trying to quantify the length of a piece of string. The cost of all those things for one family, will be COMPLETELY different to the costs for the next family.

 

Yes, the further away you get from a broad culture of social obligation to behave and be responsible - the more poverty you will see. It's psych 101, Dear. When you add in the easy money of the First World, it's not even a tiny bit surprising.

Meantime, there is no actual poverty in America, or almost none. If an individual is doing even one of the following, they are not poor:

smoke cigarettes
drink alcohol
do drugs
obtain tattoos
buy fast food
buy coffee
buy new clothes

 

Wow .. you must really hate POC and other lower socio-economic groups.

 

And the most miserable will be the kids who thought they wanted it. They are spoiled 'individualists', looking for a free lunch without strings.

That's a bandaid (and a terrible one, at that). What is the left doing about PREVENTING the problem? Because if they genuinely care, preventing it is what must be done. Unless you're saying they don't really care that people keep falling into poverty, and just want the poor folk to shut up and go away?

 

That solves for simple poverty, provides a cost of living adjustment for Labor; so even the poor can afford to get social and embrace.
