The UN has been quite successful in charging and finding certain other national ethnic cleansers guilty of war crimes and crimes against humanity They are now behind bars.
Negotiation wasn't going to change Putins mind... The invasion is devastating Russia. The resurgence of NATO, severe sanctions, hideous economic failure, hundreds of thousands fleeing Russia. That's not going to change his mind, either. The time to get tough was after the fall of the USSR. We could have used the classic carrot and stick approach. We should have given Russia something like the Marshall Plan, which was massive amounts of aid. But it would come at a cost, and that would have been an arrangement to protect the former vassal countries of the USSR against having the Russian boot again slammed down on their necks.
Sounds like the UN didn't allow much input from Russia. Talk about a world renowned body (NATO) of ****ed up diplomats.
the un in general, and the security council in particular, represent the conditions following world war ii. conditions have changed (taiwan once had the chinese veto) but as long as russia has thousands of nuclear weapons and the world's premier space program they will have a veto. we should regard this as a feature, not a bug and continue to use the un fore what can be fone to improve life on earth. whatever american conservatives say, they can not abide that the un occasionally condemns israel for their continuing atrocities. note to evangelicals : the modern state of israel was not established by god or abraham, but by the united nations .
The UN has not been "an abject failure". But a lot of diplomacy and politicking happens there. Which means they are usually trying to avoid being in the news before the negotiations are done. It's structure and authority prevent it from being able to intervene effectively. If you want success, we'll have to give it the tools needed to do it's job.
Inn retrospect the west should have seen this coming as soon as Russia lost Ukraine, Crimea etc. Ukraine should h ave been tooled up to the hilt to prevent Putin ever thinking about invading.
about your signature line : "...Do politicians lie?? Hell, yeah." cabse5 03/19/22 "Does Trump lie? Well, yeah, but Trump isn't a politician so Trump isn't a professional liar." cabse5 03/21/22 politicians are not the only profession with a well deserved reputation for mendacity. condo salesmen have been known to stretch the truth in order to close a deal.
As a matter or record in the years leading up to the invasion of Ukraine, Ukraine was more the ethnic cleanser than Russia. Ask the Chechens. Ask the Donbass.
Newsflash: This is Russia not the USSR. In fact, the economy of current day Russia is far more capitalistic than the economy of the US, for example.
Thank you. Capt Obvious. Hardly, but the point is that sanctions have devastated the Russian economy.
~ Crimes against humanity are worse — obviously condoned by todays U.N. The U.N. has been worthless. Many members today are Communist and push totalitarian policies and globalization of governments.
can you imagine the whines if the un actually had taxation authority or a standing army? many times, more than we know, moral authority and bangla deshi peacekeepers are enough, sometimes, as in iraq or ukraine, the current charter falls short.
I agree, but we prob needed to keep US troops in the country, not a lot, a couple hundred would make the point.
many members are communist? china, cuba and vietnam and perhaps north korea (we call them communist, but juche is a korean ideology). perhaps you can name 1 or 2 more but any impetus for globalization on this earth originate on wall st, not un headquarters.
Sigh, your analysis is as good as your spelling. "The immense pressure on the Russian economy led credit rating agencies including Fitch, Moody’s, and S&P Global to downgrade Russia’s debt to junk status, with some warning that default may be “imminent"." https://fortune.com/2022/03/15/russian-ruble-expert-opinion-invasion-ukraine-continues/
The UN was never created to tell countries how to run their own sovereign state. It was there to protect the global population from abuses to their human rights as they had been agreed by the UN. No the UN Has not been able to pro)tect everyone...Partly because of the politicking and machinations of the security council who protect each other. Instead of whining about its lack or success, IMO it needs recreating according to the needs of the current global situation. But it won't change because it suits some of the more difficult countries. So right now it concentrates on life saving projects like medical help for war torn countries, protection of refugees and asylum seekers, children and minorities where and when it can. It also acts as a huge spotlight in global media to highlight what is happening. That alone IMO is enough reason to keep it going. Losing those things would make the world a far worse place. and it still has power. Recently the UK has tried to outflank UN resolutions on the treatment of refugees and asylum seekers and has not been able to ignore the UN regulations regarding them so far. Another test is going through the UK parliament right now called the Nationalities and Borders Bill which in places directly defies the UN resolution on Rights of refugees 1951/67. It will be interesting to see how many MP's agree to ignoring them.
That's right Lee .. anyone who has a perspective that deviates from yours .. "Pro-Putin garbage" That said .. UN should definitely be investigating war crimes ... not only in Ukraine, but in Yemen and Palestine and Syria .. a war the UN has failed to address .. Obama-Biden have already been tagged with complicity in war crimes for Yemen. When we finally get to sorting out the Syrian mess .. Obama-Biden will be full on guilty of perpetuating war crimes - crimes against humanity - on a scale far greater than your beloved Putin.
i was happy with my condo (bought cheap during the savings and loan collapse.) but like we say about many things in our post katrina world "it ain't there no more." i feel better every day. thanks.
That is not devastation, and it's less than 1/10th of what is hitting Russia.. "The volatile situation unfolding in the wake of Russian President Vladimir Putin's large-scale invasion of Ukraine led his country to freeze its stock market Monday as he presided over a meeting with top officials over the economic crisis. The Russian central bank also hiked interest rates to 20 percent from 9.5 percent in an emergency measure to protect the ruble's value, which at one point plunged below a penny before climbing back up. Even before Russia's military assault on Ukraine, the inflation rate was at 8.7 percent in January, its highest since 2016." https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/...-crisis-sanctions-send-people-panic-rcna17910 That was Feb 28, things have been getting worse quickly, as the civilian economy collapses. This looks like an economic depression..
