Tragic and sad...and sadly not THAT uncommon.

One of the worst attacks I ever experienced was when our interpreter of about 9 months one day decided to strap a suicide vest on himself and blow up the entry control point on our outpost in Afghanistan leading to a complex attack by the Taliban on our base. This guy was our buddy who lived and slept with us and played video games etc. He was part of our unit in our eyes.

Another time the Afghan tower guards either looked the other way or "conveniently" fell asleep while a platoon sized Taliban element set up multiple vehicle IED's and munitions along one of our walls. They breached the wall with the IED's and launched RPG's and grenades at us before rushing in through the hole in the wall.

Another time while on patrol an interpreter just up and took off running and vanished out of nowhere. Then moments later our unit was attacked by the Taliban in the streets. We never saw that terp again.

I believe that the majority of our attacks were some form of an insider job where our so called Afghan Army "allies" were in on it or our interpreters were in on it and/or participated in it. Now granted these people are pretty careless to be honest....I don't know if my buddy getting his boot heel shot off by an AK-47 from the Afghan Soldier behind us was an actual accident or an "accident". Nor do I know if the incompetent Afghan tower guards really did just fall asleep while the Taliban stacked up 4 car bombs on our South wall and positioned themselves right there.

Either way, while I was over there the majority of our attacks were the Afghan Army's fault, whether on purpose or not. I mean hell the Afghan Army who controlled our entry control point to the outpost attacked US one time while we were returning from patrol. Because I guess in their eyes the Taliban graduated to wearing full battle rattle and NVGs and marched in staggered column towards military outposts....
