Commonplace in a lot of places for a lot of years. Hell it's only a few decades back that 8 year olds could get married in Kentucky with parental permission of course. I've lived in Alabama. It is a very different world. A lot different than what I was used to at the time and small towns - of which Gadsden was one - ran to a different set of standards still no one at the time would have found it particularly appalling for a thirty year old guy to date a 16 year old girl and and marry her a year or two later. Such marriages were commonplace before 1950. They weren't uncommon in the 70's. It's a holdover from the time when many women were dead in Child birth before they hit 30. And of course there was that sexist vibe that thought that anyone who was married by the time she was 25 had something wrong with her that all too many guys weren't willing to explore. By the way sex back then still mostly came after marriage not before it.

 

I struggle to think of a Republican president who has genuinely made an effort to reduce the size of government. Taft and Coolidge come to mind, Eisenhower gets points for having his heart in the right place.
