All veterans who volunteer to serve when America is at war are IMO, in a sense heroes.

But war heroes are usually given medals for illustrious actions bravely performed while engaged with the enemy.
If you are familiar with McCain's war record please paste up the descriptions of his bravery which resulted in his been awarded medals.
