    http://www.politico.com/story/2016/09/donald-trump-birtherism-campaign-statement-228261

"Donald Trump on Friday stated that he no longer believes President Barack Obama was born outside the United States, breaking away from a conspiracy theory that helped fuel his political rise.

“President Barack Obama was born in the United States, period. Now we all want to get back to making America strong and great again,” Trump said at his new Washington hotel, flanked by Medal of Honor recipients, in an appearance that often seemed like a plug for his property and an extended endorsement of Trump by veterans.

He also blamed Hillary Clinton for raising questions about Obama's citizenship during the 2008 campaign, despite no evidence that she did so.

“Hillary Clinton and her campaign of 2008 started the birther controversy. I finished it. I finished it,” he said on Friday morning."

Smart move. Hopefully this will put this story to an end.

Will this alienate some of his more hard line anti-Obama supporters?

Also, how can left-wingers claim the birther movement is racist when Trump also accused Ted Cruz of being unqualified because he was born in Canada? It has nothing to do with race.

There's no clear group who started it. Both groups used it in some way. Obviously the right more than the left, since at the time, most people hated Hillary and loved Obama. Anyways, it's not clear who concocted this rumor. Either way, it's over. Trump really beat that one to death.

Agree that Harry Reid is full of (*)(*)(*)(*), and I wouldn't vote for him. So you agree trump is a pandering liar but you'll still vote for him.

That's the truth. When they've got idiots like Harry Reid on their side, it's hopeless and over. They lost! Period!!!

Seems like the way he did this and the hoopla around it is his campaign advisors telling him he had to do it. Trump normally doesn't admit any error. This was a de facto admission of being wrong. There's no way this admission was Trump's idea.

So he finally dropped the issue that catapulted his political career. I doubt any of his followers will care, and the majority will still cling to the nutso conspiracy theory.

I love the way that he, despite the "tell it like it is rhetoric", so transparently just tells people what they want to hear, while criticizing other politicians for doing the same. It wasn't long ago that he claimed his investigators had discovered some sort of amazing evidence that he couldn't wait to reveal . . . turns out that was another of his grandiose lies.

It's not important enough for any anti-obama people to shy away. He's right though, the 2008 Clinton campaign starter the birther movement, and obama beat Hillary by calling her and her campaign racist.

Any time now we'll hear him say that he was never a birther, and he'll keep trying to spin Clinton as being the "real birther." He has a habit of just lying about his past statements when they become inconvenient, even when they are on film.

Hillary has never admitted she was wrong about calling Benghazi an attack caused by a video, has she? Several people died in that one, but nada, nothing from her.

So we've heard dozens of times, but never accompanied by any actual quotes or evidence, no matter how many times we ask.

Most people jumped on the Trump train after his immigration and terrorism comments. Calling obama out in 2012 didn't catapult anything for Trump.

lol, keep telling yourself that. Well before he made any comments about the wall or his (always vague) plans to thwart terrorism, the birther trainwreck gave him his first real, consistent first-page coverage.

Trump just can't help himself, while finally admitting he was wrong with his birther nonsense (translation: bigotry) he is still accusing Clinton's 2008 campaign of starting the birther movement which is demonstrably false. In short, he is a lying sack of excrement and he owes an apology to the President and the American people.

I find it bizarre he does this in front of veterans on National POW/MIA Day, after listening to the vets praise him and feed his unquenchable ego. I didn't see the whole thing - any shout out to John McCain? Today might have been an ideal day to apologize to McCain. McCain, to his credit, isn't thinking so much for himself but he has said Trump owes an apology to every American who has been a POW. Be a perfect fit for National POW/MIA Day, don't you think?

Nothing beats Bill telling people that "Make America Great Again" is racist and if you're a Southerner, you know exactly what it means, and then seeing him in 1992 telling his supporters he was gonna make America great again and then seeing him in a 2008 ad telling people that Hillary wanted to make America great again, followed up by "I'm Hillary Clinton and I approve this message."

    That was priceless!

Now google news can stop running this bull crap as the top news item every day. And all the rest of the liberals can shut up about it. Who even cares? Trump only asked a question. The only reason he hasnt commented on it for a while is because he didnt want to feed the liberal media animals. It was a fair question to ask since the Obama has said things like - "I was raised as an Indonesian child and a Hawaiian child and as a black child and as a white child," - Obama. It is odd to me that he states that he was raised as an Indonesian child before Hawian. I dont think many Americans would want an Indonesian being President of the USA. And I know Hawai is a state and they play college football and stuff but only since 1959. Obama was born in 1961 apparently so he only just made it anyway. Trump asked a reasonable question. Can a person born in a US territory become US President? What if a Puerto Rican wanted to be US President? Would that be ok? American Samoa? Guam? I am happy for Donald Trump to ask these questions for us because we are not all experts.

Who CARES where this muttering, radical, White-hating Socialist was born? We've already suffered his lies, deception, and autocratic rule for over 7 1/2 years, and now we're in the home-stretch.

Truth? There is just as much evidence that his mother spawned him in Africa as there is that he was spawned in Hawaii. And it has always been a point of interest to me that she was trooping around in Kenya right at about the time of his birth. But where? It no longer matters!

If he'd been squirted into existence in the middle of a sewage tank in the slums of Africa or if he'd been born in one of two different Hawaiian hospitals (take your pick... both have been claimed as his birthplace), he couldn't have done more harm to the United States of America. Harm to a republic like ours is too deep and lasting at this point to be made any more or less terrible merely by something like Obama's place of birth. I don't care anymore where Obama was born... but I do wish he'd never been born at all....

Now, we face the very real danger of an Obama "3rd-term" in the person of someone that we KNOW beyond any doubt WAS born in the United States -- Hillary Rodham Clinton. And with any luck for her faction, she will be every bit as bad for the country as he was. See? You don't have to be born in a foreign country to really hurt America....

I doubt it will make any difference at this point. I just find it interesting that his campaign had him do it. If this is an appeal to independents, they won't buy it, IMO.

I'm not one that seeks political equivalencies or excuses. Just because Trump has made it a habit of not admitting mistakes, it has no bearing on what Clinton does. I'll just point you to the fact that Trump declared he had never asked God for forgiveness. Trump changing his "opinion" on Obama being born in America is admitting he made a mistake… and that's just something Trump rarely does. My point is that Trump was likely advised to make this statement for political reasons. He generally doesn't admit mistakes, even when faced with incontrovertible evidence, but he did this time. I don't think it will help him, but it is a talking point he can use now. It's also going to be used by the opposition.

I guess next CNN is going to call on Trump to admit Hillary's not a ball busting (*)(*)(*)(*)(*) out to satiate her enormous ego.

Edit: You can't say (*)(*)(*)(*)(*) seriously?

Yes and it was very kind of the major networks to cover 30 minutes of Veterans praising Trump on national TV while he put this issue to rest.

Looks like Hillary is only going to do 5 campaign rallies in the entire month of Sept? Seems like a rather light schedule, especially compared to Trump!

Trump needs to give a more detailed rendering as to WHY he changed his mind.
