"In Iran, many were deeply concerned about how Trump's decision could affect the already struggling economy. In Tehran, President Hassan Rouhani sought to calm nerves, smiling as he appeared at a petroleum expo. He didn't name Trump directly, but emphasized that Iran continued to seek "engagement with the world."

Iran nuclear deal: What are the 'disastrous flaws' Donald Trump is referring to?
The international community is awaiting a decision from Mr Trump on whether the US will stay in the deal that he branded "insane".

Donald Trump has several reasons for hating the Iran deal - none of them have any place in determining a crucial part of US foreign policy.

From what he has said, he does not understand the agreement and is basing his decision apparently in a state of wilful ignorance.

Here are some of the reasons that could be influencing his decision:

    1. It was Barack Obama's idea

In fact it was Mr Obama's greatest foreign policy achievement.

From environmental legislation to health care reforms, Mr Trump has systematically gone about undoing his predecessor's legacy.

The Iran deal is no different.

    2. Trump hates the deal because Trump's supporters hate the deal

Mr Trump's supporters hate the deal because they have been told for years that it is a bad deal.

During the Republican primary contest that preceded the last election, it was an article of faith for each candidate to slam the deal.

It is unlikely, though, that any would have scrapped America's support for it had they reached office.

And while Republicans in Congress have loudly denounced the deal whenever possible, they have quietly done whatever it takes to keep it alive.

    3. Trump is increasingly surrounded by like minded advisers who say they hate the deal

Former national security adviser HR McMaster and former secretary of state Rex Tillerson both counselled the president not to torpedo the deal.

Now only Jim Mattis, the defence secretary, takes that position among Mr Trump's closest aides.

    4. Trump says he hates the deal because it gave the Iranians billions of dollars

He has implied that this was a bribe or a gift. It was neither.

It was money that Iran had in accounts in American banks at the time of the 1979 revolution which the US then froze.

It totalled $1.7bn plus interest and was money owed to Iran by the US, money America returned once the deal was done.

    5. Iran is evil and so the deal is too

In the simplified black and white world of US right-wing news media Iran is evil so anything that is agreed with Iran must be evil too.

This is supported by false claims.

One of them suggests the deal actually gives the Iranians nuclear weapons whereas the opposite is the case.

It has forced Iran to give up most of its nuclear material and the machines with which it could make more.

Donald Trump has repeatedly proven himself susceptible to the influence of right-wing news media.

    6. Liberals and Europeans like the deal

Ergo it must be a bad idea.

A lot was made of French president Emmanuel Macron's charm offensive in Washington last week - much of it aimed at changing Mr Trump's mind on the deal.

In the minds of many of Mr Trump's supporters that was in itself another good reason not to. The US President knows this.

    7. Ballistic missiles are not in there

Mr Trump and his supporters criticise the deal for not including Iran's ballistic missile programme.

However the agreement was deliberately restricted to dealing specifically with Iran's alleged nuclear programme.

Negotiators believed a wider deal would have been impossible to reach agreement on.

    8. Sunset clauses allow for revival

Mr Trump also questions the deal's so called sunset clauses that allow it to expire within a decade.

The deal's critics say that would allow Tehran to return to bomb making in 10 years.

Its supporters say the agreement could be extended.

Mr Trump's critics say if he cancels America's support Iran will be free to revive its nuclear programme immediately.

Mostly along party lines, but there were 4 Dems who voted No....

Not calling them idiots... debating and voting on a deal beforehand is fine, but once it's implemented, we should live up to our word unless there is proof and multi-country support to do otherwise...

There was nothing preventing further action in 10 years' time to maintain the peace and keep Iran from developing nuclear weapons. That's not "cheerleading" or "abetting" Iran in any way. It's DIPLOMACY, a concept that seems to be completely lost on you. That kind of boneheadedness gets us the endless wars you pretend to hate (though only while Democrats are in charge).

Yep, this will easily add to the existing accusations (apparently justified) that we do not hold to our agreements. In this, Trump is playing into our enemies' hands, badly weakening our position as a global leader.

Sure... I had to rewind to get the actual quote, but here's a couple that were set on the tee...

"We cannot prevent an Iranian nuclear bomb under the decaying and rotten structure of the current agreement"

"If we do nothing, we know exactly what will happen"

Utter bullshit. Paying off the leading exporter of terrorism was "Obama's greatest foreign policy accomplishment"? Right up there with givng Al Qaeda the date we were abandoning Iraq, creating and arming ISIS, and handing Egypt over to the muslim brotherhood, and giving THOSE terrorists $1.5 billion.

If it is so effective, how does the US pulling out = IRAN STARTS ENRICHING URANIUM ,when all the other nations are still in it? Don't they expect Iran to still honor it?

Color me unsurprised. I wonder if the odious and bloviating anus occupying our white house has considered how this will impact Israel.

And until he does something about Saudi Arabia, he is just another odious Israeliophile, an ineffective enabler of radical islam in a looooooooong line of equally ineffective Presidents.

Watch crude go through the roof.

Oh, wait, gas prices have already increased by about 30 cents a gallon since Trump took office, with crude going from $50 to $75 per barrel. This decision will just accelerate the trend.

So much winning, but I got a $40 a month tax cut, in exchange for $1.5 trillion debt. Yippeee....

COMPLETELY wrong! The Obama deal was tight, had good provisions for supervising and confirming, and Trump is moving us closer and closer to a world war complete with nukes.

Wait and see, Obama was the last statesman the USA will ever have. Trump is unfit, unqualified, emotionally troubled, he's a bully, and he hasn't a clue about negotiations. His attention deficit means he cannot read more than a short paragraph and his input is only the ideas of others who are like him. He rejects expertise and therefore is making very bad decisions and stupid mistakes. He will lead us into war, civil violence, and police state. And that spells the end. And his supporters refuse to see it.

You're mislead. The leading exporter of terrorism is Saudi Arabia, not Iran.

You need to read an actual history book from the actual book store, not some half baked retard right wing fringe conspiracy website.

Jesus ****ing Christ how can people be so ****ing blind to the ME an who exports what terrorism.

No. It makes more sense to help one of the planet's most evil, misguided regimes get nuclear weapons.

Of course anyone can see that.
