This is what I have been arguing on this forum for a long time and I'm glad President Trump finally did the right thing. Just like another covert CIA program in Afghanistan which created Osama Bin Laden, the CIA’s covert program to arm moderate Syrian rebels is the root cause of the rise of ISIS.

Syria's civil war is none of our business, and we never should have armed anyone in that country.

Good for Trump. This decision is one of the reasons I voted for him.

If Syria was to be left alone the FSA would have taken over years ago, Assad called for merceneries from Lebanon and Iran and only then America armed - a lil' bit - what was left of the FSA that later swiched alligance to the only power that was left to fight Assad, the Jihadists, if you make of it "we never should have armed anyone" its your call, me thinks the FSA should have been armed from the start, to me Syria is an example of not doing anything to be worse than doing something.

It is my belief that there was a very tiny (short-lived) window (at the very beginning of the conflict) where if we would've aggressively armed the anti-Assad rebels, that we could've made a difference.

The time frame of that window was very short and the USA waited too long to get on the right page.

After that, it was too late.

Definitely a huge failure of Obama's foreign policy.

If the USA had jumped in right away (and armed the rebels early), they would've caught Russia napping.

And the "Russia problem" in Syria most likely wouldn't exist.

Obama's foreign policy team dropped the ball.

Syria's civil war is none of our business.

We should have stayed out of it and just let the Syrian's determine their own future.

Never mind the many public statements by Israel that it preferred ISIS to control areas of Syria it used to control. Never mind numerous reports of covert assistance by Israel to groups linked to ISIS. Never mind numerous neocons make similar statements. Now we have the dean of the US foreign policy establishment, Henry Kissinger, make similar statements. And some wonder why there are many in countries like Iran which see ISIS as a tool of the US.

Agreed, in the beginning it was the people of Syria rising up against their own dictator. Their own army who was defecting in droves to form the FSA. Left to their own with both Syria and Islamic groups attacking them, they quicly lost any hope they had.
